Role Overview
This position focuses on guiding vehicle movement safely around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. The flagger sets up and removes traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades, and communicates with motorists using hand signals, paddles, and other traffic devices. The job calls for strong attention to detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to remain on your feet for long periods.
Key Duties
- Place traffic signs, cones, and related control devices to redirect vehicles away from active work areas.
- Use stop/slow paddles to regulate traffic movement safely and efficiently.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios and other communication tools.
- Remain standing and walking, with frequent reaching, for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Handle lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control materials to and from job locations.
- Complete routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance inspections before and after use.
- Work in outdoor environments exposed to weather, traffic, machinery, fumes, airborne particles, and moderate-to-loud noise.
- Follow company policies, procedures, and safety rules at all times.
- Take on additional tasks as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Must be able to clear a background screening, including a motor vehicle records review.
- Successful completion of a drug screening and compliance with federal DOT standards are required.
- Proper safety gear must be worn, including work boots with safety toes, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Ability to operate a two-way radio.
- Comfort working in different weather conditions and active traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for working with contractors and internal teams while providing good customer service.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Reliable attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are essential.
- Must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Willingness to travel anywhere in the state, including occasional overnight trips.
- Availability to work nights, weekends, and a rotating on-call schedule as required by project needs.
