The business has been established in New Zealand for over 13 years and is continuing to expand, creating opportunities for both local and overseas career growth.

The wider SMEC network includes more than 16,000 specialists across engineering, planning, design, project management and advisory services. The company is recognised internationally for technical quality and delivery, including ENR rankings of #24 among the Top 225 International Design Firms and #5 in Australia/Oceania.

SMEC’s transport business is growing across Australia and New Zealand, with increasing work in resilient infrastructure, sustainable mobility and major city-shaping developments. The organisation offers a collaborative and inclusive environment where people can build their capability, develop leadership skills and contribute to significant projects.

Role overview

This position is for a motivated Transport Engineer to join the Auckland team and support transport planning, traffic engineering and civil design work across New Zealand and the wider region. The role suits an early-career professional who wants varied work, broad exposure and the chance to contribute to both technical delivery and consulting activities.

You will work with experienced leaders and multidisciplinary teams on a range of projects, gaining hands-on experience in planning, design, proposals and client-focused delivery while continuing to strengthen your technical and professional skills.

Key responsibilities

  • Support transport planning, traffic engineering and civil design outputs for public-sector and infrastructure assignments.
  • Prepare technical documents, analysis, drawings and project deliverables to a high standard.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, well-coordinated and effective solutions.
  • Assist with proposals, commercial inputs and wider consulting work as part of ongoing development.
  • Apply relevant technical standards, client expectations and quality requirements to project tasks.
  • Build positive working relationships and contribute to team delivery and ongoing improvement.
  • Prioritise work effectively and complete accurate outputs within agreed timelines.

About you

You are a curious, adaptable transport professional with a solid technical base and a willingness to continue learning. You are comfortable working across different project types, taking initiative and growing into a well-rounded consultant who can add value on both technical and commercial fronts.

Requirements

  • 2 to 7 years of experience in transport planning, traffic engineering, civil design or a related infrastructure setting.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience contributing to civic or public-sector transport projects.
  • A flexible and proactive approach with the ability to adjust to changing challenges.
  • Interest in developing a broader understanding of transport planning, traffic engineering and civil design.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams.
  • A focus on continuous improvement, professional development and quality outcomes.
  • Progress toward Chartered status, or an intention to pursue it, is considered an advantage.

Culture and opportunity

SMEC promotes a diverse and inclusive workplace and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. The business aims to create a supportive professional environment that encourages growth, recognises contribution and provides meaningful work that helps shape the future of the organisation.

Across technical, delivery and leadership roles, the company offers access to professional networks, mentors and sponsorship opportunities that support career progression and foster an inclusive culture.
