Role Overview
The Maintenance Worker supports the Ottawa Booth Centre by carrying out general upkeep, safety checks, vehicle-related tasks, and shipping/receiving duties. This position also helps maintain a secure, clean, and functional environment for clients, staff, and visitors. Work may occasionally extend to other locations with a manager to complete repairs.
Key Duties
- Carry out daily sweeping and garbage removal around the property, including the front of the Ottawa Booth Centre shelter.
- Handle routine property maintenance and respond to repair requests from management.
- Complete basic repairs that do not require certification, such as patching, painting, plumbing fixes, and changing light bulbs.
- Follow preventive maintenance schedules and conduct weekly building inspections.
- Check the functioning of building systems on a weekly basis and identify issues before escalating them when possible.
- Perform seasonal cleanup of the grounds and surrounding property.
- Oversee the safe and secure condition of vehicles assigned to the Ottawa Booth Centre in line with manufacturer guidance and warranty requirements.
- Complete daily vehicle inspections and fill out the required forms.
- Drive Ottawa Booth Centre vehicles, including a 3-ton truck, when needed to collect and deliver donations.
- Receive and dispatch goods through the dock area.
- Move goods between the dock and other areas of the building.
- Load third-party trucks with outgoing goods.
- Support safety and security systems, including fire detection equipment, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, security systems, and related devices.
- Work in line with health and safety rules, including Occupational Health and Safety Act and WSIB requirements.
- Maintain a respectful and professional approach while carrying out duties in accordance with the organization’s mission and standards of conduct.
Working Environment
This role is based in a warehouse and shelter setting and may involve outdoor work in all seasons. The job can include exposure to verbal abuse or interactions with angry or abusive clients.
Physical Demands
- Climbing ladders and working at ladder height.
- Walking for extended periods.
- Pushing and pulling skids weighing up to and above 100 pounds, with a jigger.
- Lifting up to 30 pounds without help and more than 30 pounds with assistance.
- Bending, twisting, crouching, kneeling, and reaching above and below shoulder level.
- Remaining on foot for long periods.
Reporting Relationships
Internal contact includes Ottawa Booth Centre staff. External contact includes contractors.
Leadership / Technical Responsibility
This position is connected to the Coordinator of Facilities.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. The ideal candidate will have 1 to 3 years of recent general maintenance experience, preferably in an organization serving marginalized communities. Practical knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, and painting is expected, along with familiarity with health and safety rules, fire codes, PPE requirements for tool and electrical equipment use, and emergency procedures.
Skills and Other Requirements
Strong communication and organizational abilities are needed. Current WHMIS training is required. A valid G driver’s licence and a clean driving record are necessary. CSA-approved non-slip safety shoes must be worn. French and English bilingual ability is considered an advantage. A current clear police check must also be provided.
Compensation
The target pay rate for this role is $20.78 per hour, with a maximum of $20.78 per hour. Final placement within the range will depend on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
