Role overview
Walgreens is seeking a Shift Lead in Athens, AL to help run daily store operations when store management is not present. This position focuses on customer service, cash handling, store opening and closing responsibilities, team coordination, and maintaining operational standards throughout the store.
Key responsibilities
- Open and close the store when management is unavailable, including starting required systems, handling cash procedures, preparing the sales floor and stockroom for the day, and opening the back door for deliveries.
- Carry out product returns, order voids, customer refunds, cash deposits to the safe, and provide change for registers as needed.
- Deliver a positive customer experience by greeting customers and patients, answering questions, resolving concerns, and offering help with products and services.
- Set the example for customer service practices and service behaviors that create a welcoming, helpful in-store experience.
- Hold store keys and ensure the store can be opened and closed without management when necessary.
- Support and coach team members in warehouse and vendor ordering activities, including receiving deliveries through the back door.
- Process all sales accurately on the assigned register, including scan errors, price checks, price adjustments, and voids.
- Help review order exceptions on order release day and support reverse logistics activities such as returns and empty package handling.
- Assist in developing and maintaining store displays, including promotional, seasonal, structural, and sale merchandise, as well as resets and revisions.
- Maintain correct inventory records across departments, stockroom, and overstock areas.
- Help enforce the outdate program and support stock rotation and restocking using first-in, first-out practices.
- Complete basic department pricing tasks, daily price changes, and required signage placement to support accurate and compliant pricing.
- Support bookkeeping tasks such as cash reports, cash counts, ledgers, and bill payments when needed.
- Help maintain a clean, orderly, and well-kept store interior and exterior, and request repairs when management is absent.
- Assist with proper handling and placement of food items in line with company policies and procedures.
- Use store systems and equipment with working knowledge of their operation.
- Assist at the pharmacy out window when requested.
- Ensure compliance with state and local rules for regulated products such as alcohol and tobacco.
- Perform bag checks for team members before they leave the store.
- Follow company policies and procedures and maintain professional working relationships.
- Take on special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Act as a communication link between management and non-management staff when store management is not present.
- Pass along assigned work to team members, and report customer complaints and disciplinary concerns to management.
Training and development
- Attend training sessions and complete assigned PPLs requested by the manager.
Basic qualifications
- At least 1 year of prior experience in leadership, supervision, or a retail key-holder role.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently, except where not required by local rules.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of store inventory control is preferred.
- Candidates with arrest or conviction records may be considered in line with applicable hiring standards.
- Ability to obtain and keep a valid PTCB certification or pharmacy license, if required by the state.
