Role overview
The company is hiring a Senior Research & Development Engineer to join its team in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim. This role sits within VistaMed Ltd. and offers a hybrid working arrangement. The position is intended for an experienced engineer who can lead complex medical device design work and contribute to technical strategy.
Key responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end design and development of sophisticated medical devices, starting from concept and continuing through design freeze.
- Address advanced engineering problems by applying knowledge of materials, precision manufacturing techniques, and evidence-based decision making.
- Serve as a technical authority on catheter systems, extrusion-based assemblies, and biomaterials, helping guide design choices and technical direction.
- Create and carry out verification and validation plans, including IQ, OQ, and PQ, while working within ISO 13485 and FDA 21 CFR Part 820 requirements.
- Coordinate cross-functional technical projects and align design goals with manufacturability and regulatory expectations.
- Lead FMEA activities, risk reviews, and root-cause investigations to strengthen product and process reliability.
- Coach junior engineers and support project teams through technical reviews and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to innovation by evaluating new technologies, components, and automation opportunities.
- Prepare and maintain controlled technical records such as DHFs, BOMs, drawings, and test documentation in line with QMS standards.
- Work directly with customers to capture application requirements, present technical proposals, and drive design updates.
What you need
- A third-level qualification in engineering or science, ideally in mechanical or biomedical fields.
- A minimum bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related discipline such as mechanical, manufacturing, automation, or an equivalent area.
- Strong design experience using CAD software, with Solid Edge preferred.
- At least 4 years of relevant experience for senior-level applicants.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work well across teams.
