About the Opportunity
This is a senior leadership opportunity to help influence the future of justice in New Zealand. The Ministry of Justice is looking for an outstanding General Manager Delivery and Performance to steer the delivery of Te Au Reka, a major programme reshaping how courts and tribunals work.
Te Au Reka is a significant joint initiative between the Ministry and the judiciary, designed to move court operations away from manual processes and towards digital ways of working. The programme is high-profile, intricate and important, with a direct impact on the experience and outcomes of the people who use the courts every day.
Located in Wellington, this position sits at the centre of one of New Zealand’s most consequential transformation programmes. You will provide the leadership needed to keep delivery coordinated and aligned, while fostering a culture of strong performance, collaboration and accountability.
If you are motivated by complex change, purpose-led transformation and the chance to drive impact at scale, this role offers the opportunity to make a lasting difference.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the coordinated delivery of the programme across multiple workstreams, ensuring alignment with strategy, steady progress and delivery of long-term benefits.
- Develop strong and trusted working relationships across the Ministry, judiciary, sector partners, suppliers and internal teams to work through complexity and achieve results.
- Set up an environment that supports high performance through disciplined programme management, open reporting, effective risk control and ongoing improvement.
- Give clear, authoritative guidance to senior leaders, governance groups and ministers on delivery progress, risks and the best options to improve outcomes.
- Act on behalf of the Deputy Secretary in important governance settings, helping shape decisions that influence programme direction, delivery and overall performance.
- Keep services and delivery methods focused on users, strengthening access to justice and improving the experience for those who rely on the system.
What You’ll Bring
You will need strong leadership, sound judgement and a delivery mindset to succeed in a complex, high-visibility setting. Experience in the following areas will be important:
- Leading large transformation initiatives or mission-critical programmes with many moving parts, competing demands and substantial visibility.
- Building credibility, influencing at executive and board level, and working effectively across organisations.
- Creating clarity and momentum in complex delivery environments, while balancing strategic goals with day-to-day operational realities.
- Leading diverse, high-performing teams and promoting accountability, teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Working with governance, risk and performance frameworks in large and complex organisations, preferably in the public sector or a similarly complex environment.
- Exercising strong judgement, resilience and confidence when making decisions in uncertain and complex situations.
- Being driven by the opportunity to deliver work that makes a meaningful difference for communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
