About the Company

Compass is an education technology company focused on improving the school experience for staff, students, families, and administrators through simple, connected software. Its platform helps schools run communication and operations more effectively so they can focus on learning and student growth.

The business has expanded into a global scale-up and currently supports more than 5,000 schools across three countries. A team of over 300 people drives the all-in-one school management platform used by education communities to connect, communicate, and operate.

About the Role

Compass is hiring a Junior Cyber Security Engineer to join the Technology team in Melbourne. This is an entry-level opportunity for someone who is curious, collaborative, and eager to build a career in cyber security through practical, hands-on work. You will work with experienced engineers to help safeguard the company’s platforms, people, and data, while contributing to important security outcomes from the outset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Track and review security alerts, then escalate any serious issues to senior team members.
  • Support vulnerability scanning and help drive remediation across applications and cloud-based systems.
  • Look into reports of phishing, malware, and suspicious behaviour, then record findings clearly.
  • Assist senior engineers with incident response activities.
  • Maintain security documentation, runbooks, and internal knowledge resources.
  • Help with compliance-related work such as evidence collection and access reviews.
  • Keep up with new threats and share relevant learnings with the team.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned by the manager.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of cyber security principles and common threat types.
  • Exposure to networking, operating systems, and at least one cloud platform.
  • Some programming or scripting knowledge, or a willingness to learn Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Strong curiosity, close attention to detail, and a security-minded approach.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills.
  • Motivation to learn from senior colleagues and grow in a cyber security career.

Benefits

  • Hybrid work setup based out of the Melbourne office hub.
  • Training and development support, including a dedicated professional development budget.
  • 24/7 access to an Employee Assistance Program with face-to-face, phone, and live chat support.
  • Parental leave support for both primary and secondary carers.
  • Regular team activities, social budgets, and in-office perks such as lunches and end-of-week socials.
  • Employee referral program.
  • A supportive and inclusive workplace where employee voices are valued.

Additional Requirements

Before starting, the selected candidate must provide a valid Employee Working With Children Check, a satisfactory National Police Check, and proof of unrestricted work rights in Australia such as citizenship, passport, or birth certificate.

Equal Opportunity

Compass is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes diversity in the workplace. The company is committed to building an inclusive environment for all employees.

Application Note

This role is aimed at people early in their cyber security career who want strong support for learning and development.
