Learning Mentor

Overview

This full-time Learning Mentor opportunity is based in Plymouth, Devon, within the Greater Plymouth Area. The role offers a day rate of GBP 92.56 to GBP 95 per day and can be taken on either a day-to-day or long-term contract basis. The start date is immediate.

This position sits in a specialist SEN setting and is suited to someone who is motivated by helping young people feel emotionally safe, understood, and ready to re-engage with education. It is a meaningful role for an empathetic, resilient person who wants to make a real difference every day.

What the role involves

• Provide one-to-one support for students dealing with high anxiety, sensory overload, or school refusal, and help them develop practical coping strategies.
• Act as a dependable adult who supports pupils' emotional wellbeing and mental health so they can gradually reconnect with learning.
• Work in partnership with parents and carers to maintain a consistent and supportive approach between home and school.
• Support learners in community settings around Plymouth to build everyday life skills, confidence in social situations, and the ability to handle real-world experiences.

About the ideal candidate

No formal teaching background is essential, but the role calls for strong patience, active listening, and a sincere commitment to supporting vulnerable young people.

The right person will be flexible, creative, and calm enough to adjust plans when a student is having a difficult day. Clear communication, trust-building, and a proactive approach to community-based learning and safety are also important.

Experience and background

Prior experience supporting children or young people with special educational needs is preferred, especially where Autism, ADHD, SEMH, or trauma have been factors.

The position is available on either a day-to-day basis or as a longer-term placement, depending on your availability and career preferences.

An immediate start is available, allowing you to begin contributing right away.

You will be supported by dedicated consultants throughout the placement.
