Role overview
This full-time onsite position in Lethbridge, Alberta is centered on the safe and efficient physical handling of parcels. The work involves loading, unloading, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages by hand. Team members may rotate through several operational stations such as loading, unloading, palletizing, scanning, weighing, keying (SWAK), quality assurance, facing, switching, and similar warehouse flow tasks.
Core duties
In addition to general parcel handling and any other tasks assigned by supervisors, the role focuses on keeping packages moving safely and accurately through the operation.
- Use the hand-to-surface method when handling parcels.
- Load and unload packages from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading grates.
- Perform repeated lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling for roughly 3 to 5 hours at a time, with the possibility of working one or more shifts in a day.
- Sort parcels by identifying the correct conveyor path through scanning, reading labels and boards, checking numbers, and remembering routing details.
- Complete other assigned work as needed.
Specialized assignments
Some PH assignments require added training and/or specialized responsibilities.
- Package Handler Trainer: trains other package handlers on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning methods so parcels move safely and efficiently through the operation.
- Package Handler – Air: performs a multi-step package inspection process to ensure air-restricted parcels are not loaded into an air container.
Additional responsibilities for specialized roles
Package Handler Trainer
- Trains new package handlers in effective unloading, loading, palletizing, transporting, handling small items, SWAK, and handling non-conveyable parcels.
- Provides coaching to other package handlers who need extra instruction on unloading, transporting, loading, palletizing, small-item handling, SWAK, or non-conveyable parcel handling, as directed by management.
- Offers feedback on proper parcel handling techniques when required.
- Reinforces dock safety standards among peers.
- Understands and demonstrates all required processes and procedures by example.
- Updates managers on sorting conditions so operational efficiency decisions can be made.
- Helps implement new parcel-handling procedures and techniques.
- Regularly loads, unloads, palletizes, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls parcels while training other handlers.
Package Handler – Air
- Scans every package in the air consolidation area and inspects for hazardous materials or ORM-D designation.
- Loads parcels into the unit load device when applicable.
- Completes “restricted package return to sender notifications” in SCMS for air-restricted parcels.
- Regularly loads, unloads, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls parcels.
Education and experience
No minimum education is required, and no prior experience is necessary for the base role.
For specialized assignments, prior package-handling experience with FedEx Express Corporation is preferred:
- Package Handler Trainer: 6 months of package-handling experience with FedEx Express Corporation preferred.
- Package Handler – Air: 6 months of package-handling experience with FedEx Express Corporation preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Ability to understand and follow work instructions and safety methods.
- Ability to distinguish numbers and information accurately enough to sort parcels correctly.
- Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as rollers, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well in a fast-moving team environment.
- For employees using switching equipment, a valid driver’s license and a clean DOT record are required.
- Package Handler Trainer must be able to train multiple peers at the same time.
- Package Handler – Air must successfully complete and maintain FedEx Ground Airlift Consolidation Gateway training and the government-required indirect air carrier (IAC) training, with annual recertification required.
Working conditions
- Work may take place in both hot and cold temperatures.
- The environment can be very noisy.
- Must be able to lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds.
- No travel is expected.
Schedule
This is a PPT role with a morning shift from Monday to Friday, 06:00 am to 09:00 am.
