About the Role

The Green Tailor is a custom menswear workshop based in Pretoria with a focus on formal tailoring. In addition to made-to-measure menswear, the studio also provides a wide alterations service that includes items such as suits, wedding gowns, curtains, and leather jackets.

The studio is hiring an experienced tailor who can take charge of the alterations section and develop into a leadership position over time. The role involves overseeing most alteration work through the current alterations tailor, while also handling client consultations, more demanding alterations, and support work on bespoke suits.

Core Responsibilities

You will be responsible for managing the full alterations process, starting with client consultations and ending with final handover. The role includes translating fitting sessions into precise work instructions, guiding the current alterations tailor and apprentices, maintaining strong quality standards, completing difficult or urgent alterations yourself when needed, and returning finished items to clients while addressing any concerns.

Skills and Working Style

The ideal candidate should be technically strong across a wide range of alteration work and understand how garments are constructed. You should be able to work neatly, accurately, and with little oversight, while also taking initiative and solving problems independently. Clear communication, confidence with clients, and the ability to lead and develop junior team members are also important. The role requires balancing workmanship, speed, and workflow effectively.

Compensation

The salary offered is between R10,000 and R15,000, depending on experience and skill level. This is a performance-oriented position with room for increased responsibility and pay as the business expands.

Interview Process

Shortlisted applicants will first have a video call interview to discuss the role. Stronger candidates will then be asked to complete a paid day of work at the studio to demonstrate alteration skills. Promising applicants may be invited for a second paid day to show their bespoke tailoring abilities.
