Role overview

Cisco’s Product Operations group within the Core Routing Business Unit is central to taking advanced hardware products from early development to large-scale manufacturing and customer shipment. This function connects engineering, supply chain, and factory operations to keep product delivery efficient, reliable, and ready for every stage of the lifecycle.

Impact of the role

In this position, you will support mechanical product engineering for new and sustaining products in the Cisco 8000 portfolio. Your work will cover the full product journey, from pre-concept commitment through end of life, with ownership of product cost, quality, and engineering effectiveness. For new launches, you will partner with hardware, mechanical, process, test, and reliability teams to solve design and manufacturing challenges and help achieve a strong first customer ship result. For existing products, you will focus on reducing cost and improving yield through design-led enhancements.

Core responsibilities

  • Support new product introduction and ongoing engineering activities across the full lifecycle, from pre-concept commit through end of life.
  • Work with cross-functional partners to develop processes and technologies that enable successful product development.
  • Structure bills of materials and manage BOM-related risks.
  • Collaborate with hardware, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams to resolve design-for-everything issues before product release.
  • Contribute to design and manufacturing failure mode and effects analysis.
  • Lead and support product-quality issue resolution for both NPI and sustaining programs.
  • Drive value engineering and cost-avoidance efforts before production release by engaging early with component engineering, T&Q, GSM, and hardware teams.
  • Influence component choices, process efficiency, and design updates to improve cost and manufacturability.
  • Perform design-lab experimentation and close DOE/EFA items raised from the field.
  • Evaluate technical capability gaps in contract manufacturing and the supply chain.
  • Prepare, analyze, and release product documentation.
  • Support technical lifecycle activities such as defect reduction, component qualification, and related initiatives.
  • Provide leadership for resolving complex technical issues.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification, along with 12+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of sound design principles and engineering development practices.
  • Ability to use CAD tools and troubleshoot failures down to the mechanical part level, including design-related issues, with awareness of manufacturing processes and tolerances.
  • Hands-on experience with CREO CAD tools.
  • Deep knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and PCB assembly processes and technologies.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities at once.
  • Experience with switch or router products is an added advantage.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with design and analysis tools such as Valor, schematic tools, CAD, and other CAE applications.
  • Strong understanding of the end-to-end process for optical and standard printed circuit board assembly.
