Role overview

The Office of Max Bannerman MSP is recruiting a Parliamentary Researcher to support the newly elected Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Highlands and Islands and Holyrood Whip/Parliamentary Business Manager. Based at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, this position also involves regional travel across the Highlands and Islands when needed. It is a permanent, full-time role with a probationary period.

This is a wide-ranging, high-tempo opportunity for someone who can combine strong numerical analysis with clear political judgment and persuasive writing. The postholder will work across research, briefing and communications for a new group of Reform MSPs in opposition, with scope to take on significant responsibility early on. The role rewards sharp thinking, quick learning, initiative and sound political awareness more than a polished background alone.

Working pattern and conditions

The role is full-time and based onsite. It moves quickly, and flexibility to work additional hours when parliamentary or media business requires it is essential. The salary follows the SPCB Members' Staff pay scale. The contract is permanent, subject to successful completion of probation.

Key responsibilities

The successful candidate will produce quantitative and qualitative research, convert evidence into compelling political messaging, and support parliamentary and media work across a broad range of tasks.

Research and analysis

• Investigate budgets, official statistics, polling and wider datasets to identify the key message and test the strength of evidence.
• Review policy, legislation and political developments affecting the Highlands and Islands.
• Turn research findings into concise, accurate briefings, speaking notes, speeches and lines to take, often at short notice.

Communications and media

• Draft press releases, opinion pieces and social media content.
• Serve as an initial contact for media enquiries and respond promptly with accuracy and confidence.
• Build and sustain effective relationships with local and national media contacts.
• Develop and expand the MSP’s online and social media presence.

Parliamentary support

• Prepare parliamentary questions, motions, amendments and debate contributions.
• Create detailed briefing notes and committee questions.
• Support complex constituent correspondence matters when required.

About the ideal candidate

You may be a graduate, ideally with a strong degree from a leading university in a relevant subject, or you may bring equivalent experience from your career. The preferred candidate will be highly numerate, analytically strong, confident with policy and legislative material, and able to write with clarity and impact under pressure. They should be comfortable working with digital and social media tools, discreet with confidential information, and motivated by Reform’s aims and values.

Applicants should be able to build productive relationships with people across parliament, media, external organisations and other stakeholders. A self-starting attitude, resilience, accuracy and strong organisational skills are all important in this role.

The closing date for applications is 22 June 2026. Interviews will take place in person at the Scottish Parliament and will be conducted on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged.
