Overview

This position is based at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, part of Minor Hotels’ international portfolio of more than 530 properties across Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Europe, and South America. The role sits within a global hospitality group known for operating brands such as Anantara, Avani, Elewana, Oaks, NH Hotels, NH Collection, nhow, and TIVOLI.

Role Summary

The skipper is responsible for the safe operation of the vessel, the wellbeing and comfort of passengers and crew, and the overall condition, readiness, and compliance of the assigned boat. The role also involves leading the crew, coordinating with operations and technical teams, and responding appropriately to emergencies and marine operational requirements.

Key Duties

• Stay alert to guest needs and resolve inquiries so that guests receive full satisfaction.
• Take full responsibility for the boat, including the safety, security, and comfort of everyone on board.
• Lead the crew, supervise their work, and support their training and performance monitoring.
• Maintain personal uniform standards and ensure the crew presents themselves appropriately and keeps uniforms in good condition.
• Prepare the assigned vessel before departure and keep it clean and ready for service.
• Navigate the boat safely and manage it with proper seamanship.
• Send distress alerts and request shore-side assistance when necessary.
• Handle emergencies and carry out the assigned response actions.
• Keep the vessel clean inside and outside at all times.
• Maintain logbooks accurately and review all entries.
• Ensure manifests are displayed for every departure.
• Follow the approved passage plan and document any deviation with an explanation.
• Escalate unsafe acts and near misses to management.
• Keep the boat supplied with fresh water and fuel, and manage black water discharge properly.
• Follow safe bunkering procedures.
• Enforce safety and environmental rules, including the no-smoking policy and environmental protection requirements.
• Report defects or issues affecting the vessel, navigational tools, engines, or other equipment to the Port Captain for onward review by technical and guest fleet operations management.
• Address passenger complaints and concerns in a professional manner.
• Ensure luggage and cargo are secured and stowed correctly.
• Maintain mooring ropes and berthing equipment in good condition.
• Carry out departure checks and report defective equipment to the operations team.
• Notify the Coast Guard and other relevant authorities when required.
• Safeguard all vessel certificates and manuals, including the registration card.
• Record any crew shortage or absence.
• Brief the crew before each duty shift.
• Verify that the fire panel remains operational.
• Confirm that all fire-fighting and life-saving appliances are in order.
• Pass all operational details to the next skipper and the Port Captain at the end of duty.
• Work across more than three vessel types in the fleet, including IPS-driven vessels.
• Join training activities for other crew members when requested, working with the training officer.
• Support dry-docking transfers and procedures.
• Take part in emergency sailings in heavy weather only after approval from the Marine Operations Manager.
• Take part in emergency sailings in restricted visibility only after approval from the Marine Operations Manager.

Qualifications

This role requires strong marine operations knowledge, technical competence, clear English communication, the ability to stay composed under pressure, and a professional, pleasant manner.
