About the role

The Homemaker position is a full-time permanent opportunity with Lookout Housing and Health Society at Lighthouse Shelter in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The organization supports adults with little or no income by connecting them to housing and essential support services, with as few barriers as possible.

Work schedule and conditions

This role follows a Sunday to Thursday schedule, with shifts from 08:30 to 16:30. Each shift is 7.5 hours long. Days off are consecutive, and the schedule may be adjusted with two weeks’ notice. The probationary/qualifying period is 488 hours, with reviews at the midpoint and end.

The position requires the ability to keep a respirator seal area clean-shaven and to complete annual fit testing for a half-mask respirator in line with WorkSafeBC and the organization’s safety requirements. Employees must stay alert throughout working hours; sleeping on shift is not allowed.

Compensation

The wage is $23.89 to $25.54 per hour, depending on the applicant’s seniority under the Collective Agreement.

What you will do

This job focuses on maintaining clean, safe, and orderly living and shared spaces for residents and/or shelter clients.

  • Clean rooms, make beds, change linens, do laundry, and keep cleaning and personal care supplies organized and stocked.
  • Carry out routine cleaning and disinfecting across surfaces and areas such as walls, windows, ceilings, floors, carpets, vents, furniture, mattresses, blinds, and washrooms.
  • Sort and organize donations and help supervise and guide volunteers.
  • Support clients with personal hygiene and nutrition when needed.
  • Follow the health and safety program and contribute to safe work practices.
  • Remain attentive during all working hours; sleeping during shifts is not permitted.
  • Meet respirator-related safety requirements, including maintaining the required facial area and completing annual fit testing.

Requirements

Candidates should have Grade 12 and at least one year of recent related experience, or a suitable combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate is required.
  • Crisis Intervention Skills Training is considered an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Strong skills in organizing tasks and managing workload.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients and coworkers.
  • Comfort working with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse setting.

  • Physically and mentally able to handle the demands of the role.
  • Ability to use job-related equipment such as laundry machines.
  • If there has been concern related to alcohol or drug use, at least two years of sobriety is required.
  • Must pass a Criminal Record Clearance for the Vulnerable Sector.
