Role overview
This opportunity is for a seasoned Java Architect to steer the design and ongoing development of large-scale enterprise applications in a demanding, fast-moving technology setting. The role blends architecture leadership, hands-on technical contribution, and support for major modernisation and digital transformation work.
You will help shape platforms that are built to scale, remain secure, and are easier to maintain over time. Alongside this, you will promote contemporary engineering practices, support Agile delivery, and contribute to cloud-oriented technology adoption while guiding teams toward strong delivery outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Create and refine application architecture so it stays aligned with business goals and technical strategy.
- Prepare both high-level and detailed technical designs for enterprise systems and platform improvements.
- Convert business needs into practical, scalable solutions and realistic delivery estimates.
- Assess technical impacts, while identifying dependencies, constraints, and delivery risks.
- Oversee architecture governance, including design reviews, code quality checks, and adherence to technical standards.
- Support full technical delivery across development, integration, deployment, and release stages.
- Help introduce CI/CD methods and automation for deployments.
- Advise engineering teams on scalability, performance, maintainability, and security best practices.
- Work closely with engineering, QA, DevOps, and product stakeholders.
- Coach developers and provide technical direction across complex workstreams.
- Contribute to ongoing improvement efforts and Agile ways of working.
Technical experience required
- Strong practical experience building enterprise applications with Java.
- Deep familiarity with the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot and related tools.
- Good understanding of RESTful API design and backend integration patterns.
- Strong capability with Oracle databases, including SQL tuning and PL/SQL development.
- Hands-on experience with ORM tools such as Hibernate or JPA.
- Exposure to enterprise runtime environments and middleware platforms.
- Experience using build tools such as Maven or Gradle.
- Working knowledge of automated testing with JUnit and Mockito.
- Solid understanding of Git-based version control workflows.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment tools.
- Comfort working with JSON, XML, and related integration technologies.
- Strong capability in JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Experience building modern web applications with React or similar frameworks.
- Understanding of component-based UI design and reusable frontend patterns.
- Good knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and responsive web development.
- Experience connecting frontend applications to REST APIs and backend services.
- Familiarity with frontend build processes, tooling, and package management.
- Awareness of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
- Exposure to frontend testing practices and UI quality assurance.
Preferred background
- Broader full-stack exposure across backend and frontend technologies.
- Experience in application modernisation or digital transformation programmes.
- Understanding of cloud-native development and distributed systems architecture.
- Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and performance tuning skills.
- Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and operational support practices.
- Experience working in enterprise or highly regulated environments.
- Ability to influence technical standards and mentor engineering teams.

Location and working pattern
The role is based in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland, with a hybrid setup requiring 3 days onsite each week.
