Design is central to that mission. The team is looking for a Content Designer who can help make products intuitive, approachable, and ambitious in what they enable. As an early hire, you would have a major influence on product direction and the design culture that grows around it.

About the role

You will work closely with a small group of product designers and partners across functions to shape product experiences for both current and future needs. Your work will span the full design lifecycle for new features and product improvements across OpenAI products, helping define the future of the technology, the product, and the design approach.

The ideal candidate brings strong craft leadership, sharp product judgment, technical curiosity, and a systems-oriented perspective. You should be eager to learn how AI works, where it succeeds or falls short, and how content design should evolve in an AI-first environment.

This position is based in either San Francisco or New York, and relocation support is available for new hires.

Key responsibilities

  • Own content strategy for high-impact product areas, starting with early framing and information architecture and extending through UX writing and launch readiness.
  • Define user understanding by shaping product concepts, mental models, narratives, terminology, and key moments where trust or clarity may weaken.
  • Develop naming, framing, and language approaches for new, unclear, or experimental AI product experiences.
  • Create reusable systems such as content standards, naming frameworks, terminology guidance, voice guidance, and domain-specific playbooks.
  • Build the language infrastructure that supports teams, including glossaries, pattern libraries, review processes, evaluation rubrics, prompt libraries, and quality guidance.
  • Use AI-assisted methods to broaden what content and design teams can accomplish, including prototyping, prompt development, design-system work, UX tools, and faster iteration.
  • Set expectations for AI-assisted or model-produced copy through prompt templates, tone guardrails, and quality criteria.
  • Participate in user research to better understand user needs, comprehension, expectations, and trust.
  • Coach designers and cross-functional teammates on scalable content design practices and clearer product communication.
  • Help shape the Content Design team’s culture, operating rhythms, and repeatable practices.

Candidate profile

You are likely to do well in this role if you bring extensive content design experience on large-scale software products, especially in zero-to-one or ambiguous spaces, and if you can clearly show how your work improves product quality, user understanding, trust, and adoption.

You should have experience creating scalable content systems and governance that help teams make better decisions about naming, terminology, voice and tone, UX writing, and content quality assurance.

Experience with localization practices is important, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with localization teams. You should also be comfortable defining and refining product voice and tone across complex product ecosystems.

This role calls for strong collaboration with AI research, product, design, engineering, policy, and other technical partners to turn complex needs into understandable product experiences. Interest in prompt design, model-generated content, AI-assisted workflows, evaluation methods, quality rubrics, and UX tooling will be especially valuable.
