Illustrator – Contract

Role Overview

This contract role is for an illustrator who can craft a moving children’s picture book with rich, cinematic artwork. The assignment includes producing 26 full-color interior spreads plus a cover, all formatted at 8.5” x 8.5”. The visual direction calls for a warm, polished, emotionally resonant look with believable character proportions and gentle cinematic lighting so the illustrations connect with both children and their families.

The illustrator will be expected to work from detailed character sheets, scene breakdowns, and reference material to keep the visual language consistent throughout the book. Selection begins with a paid test illustration to confirm style compatibility and overall fit.

Responsibilities

• Design 26 full-color interior illustrations and one cover image in a painterly, film-inspired style for a children’s book.
• Maintain strong character continuity and support the story’s emotional arc across all artwork.
• Use the supplied character sheets, scene notes, and visual references as the basis for illustration development.
• Prepare final files in the required 8.5” x 8.5” print-ready format.
• Complete a paid sample illustration as part of the evaluation process.
• Revise artwork based on feedback, within the mutually agreed scope and timeline.
• Provide only original artwork and ensure no part of the submission is generated by AI.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience creating children’s book illustrations or comparable work with a realistic, painterly, and cinematic finish.
• A portfolio showing strong storytelling, consistent characters, and refined execution.
• Comfort using digital illustration workflows and tools appropriate for print production.
• Ability to translate detailed creative briefs and references into accurate visuals.
• Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to receiving and applying feedback.
• Commitment to producing fully original artwork without AI assistance.
• Capacity to work to the project schedule and planned revision milestones.
