Junior Data Scientist - AI Practice Team

Role overview

ABS is hiring a Junior Data Scientist for its AI Practice Team in Europe on a full-time basis. The position supports AI consulting work across policy, data, and document-focused solutions by preparing, exploring, and modeling client data within a multidisciplinary delivery team. Working alongside senior data scientists, consultants, and subject-matter specialists, you will help transform real-world data into usable insights, features, and reusable components that support AI-driven solutions. The role is based in Warrington or London, England, with some flexibility to work remotely. It offers exposure to current AI tooling, data workflows, and industrial use cases while helping you develop strong production-aware analytics skills.

What you will do

• Assist with AI consulting projects by cleaning, organizing, and examining client data from tables, time series, and documents so it can be used for modeling and insight generation.
• Support the creation, testing, and documentation of machine learning models, analytics pipelines, and proof-of-concept solutions under the direction of senior data scientists.
• Use document and data services to pull information from reports, PDFs, logs, and other unstructured content with NLP and related methods.
• Develop and maintain simple dashboards, reports, and visual outputs in Python, Power BI, or similar tools to share findings with consultants and client stakeholders.
• Work with consultants and domain experts to turn business questions into analytical work, confirm results, and adjust methods based on feedback.
• Keep project materials well organized and reproducible, including code, notebooks, datasets, and documentation, using modern collaboration and version control practices.

Requirements

The role calls for a candidate with a strong grounding in data science and machine learning, solid Python and SQL experience, and the ability to handle real-world data problems. You should be comfortable working in collaborative, client-facing settings and willing to learn quickly from senior colleagues.

• A bachelor’s degree in a STEM subject such as Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics, or an equivalent level of practical experience.
• At least 2 years of combined experience gained through projects, internships, or professional roles using data science or machine learning tools and techniques.
• Hands-on experience with data preparation, modeling, and evaluation using Python, SQL, and commonly used machine learning libraries.
• Exposure to AI, machine learning, or analytics work in academic, research, or professional environments, preferably involving messy or real-world datasets.
• Familiarity with cloud data platforms and modern analytics environments such as Azure, AWS, GCP, or Databricks is beneficial, though not essential.
• Strong understanding of data science and statistics, with practical use of Python libraries such as pandas and scikit-learn, plus SQL-based data sources.
• Ability to work with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, including documents, logs, and text.
• Confidence using Jupyter notebooks and Git-based workflows to produce reproducible, version-controlled analysis.
• Clear and well-structured communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical audiences in business-friendly language.
• A collaborative attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to absorb feedback while adapting to new tools, methods, and domains.
• An organized, detail-focused working style with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines consistently.
• Applicants must have a valid right to work in the UK.
• Experience with ML/NLP on real datasets, including tasks such as classification, forecasting, document extraction, OCR, LLMs, or search/retrieval systems, would be an advantage.
• Exposure to tools such as Databricks, MLflow, Docker, Power BI, or Tableau, as well as cloud platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP, is nice to have.
• Experience or familiarity with industrial, maritime, asset-intensive, or consulting/client-facing environments would also be beneficial.

This role reports to the Senior Data Scientist and does not have direct reports.
