Methods Manager

Role overview

The Methods Manager is responsible for shaping, governing, and rolling out construction methodologies across the project so that work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with the design, programme, and site limitations. Reporting to the Technical Director, this position serves as the technical link between design, engineering, planning, and site operations. The role owns sequencing, temporary works strategy, constructability reviews, and the approval flow for methods, turning approved designs into practical and safe construction approaches.

Core responsibilities

• Build, coordinate, and supervise construction methodologies and sequencing plans, including all temporary and enabling works for underground and above-ground structures, while keeping them aligned with the approved permanent design and site conditions.
• Create cost-conscious construction solutions and detailed lifting plans for major lifts involving precast concrete units and structural steel, with a strong grasp of modular and off-site construction methods.
• Spot repeated work activities and introduce improved methods, selecting the right tools, equipment, and lifting accessories to lift productivity, reduce cycle times, and support schedule and cost targets.
• Work with project teams to adopt Modern Methods of Construction across several sites.
• Apply solid understanding of geotechnical conditions and how they affect temporary and enabling works performance.
• Develop and coordinate deep excavation solutions with specialist designers, including slope stability checks, shoring, and temporary earth-retaining systems needed for safe construction.
• Set up access routes, site logistics, lifting plans, temporary works concepts, and construction staging.
• Run constructability and buildability reviews with Design Managers, site teams, and subcontractors to improve execution, increase design practicality, and reduce construction risk.
• Contribute methodology expertise to value engineering, review alternative build options, and define effective mitigation actions for project risks.
• Act as the technical interface connecting Design, Engineering, BIM, and site delivery teams.
• Check design outputs for constructability, including temporary formwork and permanent structure drawings.
• Review temporary works bills of quantities for planning and budget preparation.
• Ensure all methodologies comply with HSE rules, legal requirements, client standards, and company procedures.
• Support and lead risk assessments, lifting studies, constructability hazard reviews, and temporary works risk assessments.
• Embed safety-by-design and safety-by-method principles into planning and execution.
• Support permit-to-work controls and contribute to method statement review and approval.
• Assist planning teams with realistic construction sequences, activity durations, resource loading, and key constraints.
• Identify ways to improve productivity, efficiency, and construction approaches.
• Monitor site execution against approved methods and recommend corrections or better approaches when needed.
• Lead, coach, and develop the Methods Engineering team, Temporary Works Coordinator, and Technical Coordinators, while setting clear performance expectations and accountability.
• Apply consistent engineering and design management practices across disciplines and projects within ABCC.
• Promote a strong culture of constructability, risk awareness, and disciplined design governance.
• Capture lessons learned and use them to improve design delivery, coordination, and engineering performance over time.

This role sits within design-and-build construction projects that involve complex site execution, logistics, and temporary works. It is suited to large-scale projects that need advanced leadership in construction methodology and sequencing.

Experience and language requirements

• At least 15 years of experience in construction methodology, site engineering, or methods management on major projects.
• Proven background in developing and applying complex construction methods and sequencing strategies.
• Strong knowledge of temporary works, heavy lifting, steel erection, logistics, and specialist construction techniques.
• Hands-on experience working with design, planning, BIM, and construction teams.
• Strong command of English, both written and spoken.

Education and professional profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required.
• A master’s degree is considered an advantage.
• Professional engineering status is an added advantage.

Technical and leadership skills

• Proven ability to lead construction methodology and execution planning.
• Good knowledge of civil engineering codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to translate design intent into safe, workable, and efficient construction methods.
• Strong understanding of temporary works design, construction sequencing, and constructability risk control.
• Experience leading methodology reviews, technical briefings, and site implementation.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills for coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.
