Role Overview
This full-time, on-site Microbiologist position is based in Loganholme, Queensland, Australia. The role focuses on routine and specialized microbiological testing, including preparing samples and culture media, running and maintaining laboratory equipment, and carrying out analyses to detect and measure microorganisms across different sample types. You will record and interpret findings, support quality control and quality assurance activities, and work in line with laboratory safety and regulatory expectations.
Key Duties
- Carry out routine and advanced microbiological testing for a range of sample types.
- Prepare samples, culture media, and related reagents for testing.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Identify and quantify microorganisms using standard laboratory methods.
- Review, interpret, and document test outcomes clearly and accurately.
- Support quality control and quality assurance procedures, including validation and routine checks.
- Investigate and resolve technical issues affecting laboratory work.
- Assist with method development or validation when required.
- Work with other laboratory staff and communicate results to internal stakeholders.
- Follow laboratory safety rules, standardized methods, and regulatory requirements at all times.
Required Background and Skills
The ideal candidate should bring solid microbiology knowledge along with hands-on experience in microbial identification, enumeration, and contamination testing. Practical laboratory capability is important, including sample handling, aseptic technique, and preparation of culture media and reagents. Experience using common lab equipment such as incubators, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, and analytical instruments is also expected. Familiarity with quality control practices, quality assurance systems, regulatory compliance, and standardized testing methods will be valuable. Strong attention to detail, accuracy in data handling, and the ability to manage several tasks and deadlines are essential. Good written and verbal communication skills, plus the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary lab environment, are also needed. Experience with laboratory information management systems and basic reporting or data analysis tools is preferred.
Qualifications
A relevant bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or a closely related discipline is required. Higher qualifications are considered an advantage.
