About the role
As a café team member, you’ll help create a welcoming, efficient service experience for customers throughout the day. The role combines food preparation, customer interaction, housekeeping, and adherence to safety and hygiene standards. You’ll play a hands-on part in keeping the café running smoothly, from preparing menu items to serving guests and maintaining a clean, organised environment.
This is an active, varied position with opportunities to learn, progress, and enjoy flexible working arrangements. Tesco offers new colleagues a minimum of 8 guaranteed hours per week. Shift patterns are planned within set availability windows, and schedules are shared 3 weeks in advance. If your availability is close to, but not exactly within, the advertised times, you’re still encouraged to apply.
You must be 18 years or older to be eligible for this role.
Key responsibilities
Your duties will vary based on business needs, but will generally include preparing and serving food, helping customers, and ensuring the café meets its quality and safety standards.
Operational duties
- Keep kitchen tools, equipment, and utensils clean and orderly.
- Serve customers promptly, efficiently, and with a friendly approach.
- Follow food hygiene and safety rules, including maintaining required records.
- Use FIFO stock rotation to help keep ingredients fresh.
- Receive deliveries and store food safely.
- Work in line with all store and café procedures.
- Prepare, cook, and serve menu items according to café standards.
- Make sure products are well presented and available as needed.
- Know the café menu well and serve items exactly as intended.
- Handle customer concerns and share relevant issues with the Café Manager.
- Stay informed about internal updates and new initiatives.
- Clear and sanitise tables so the café remains clean and inviting.

Working pattern and employment details
This is a full-time onsite position. The role includes flexible working hours, with contracted hours scheduled within your availability window and 3 weeks’ notice of shifts.
