Role and Location
Penticton, British Columbia, offers a scenic interior setting surrounded by lakes, mountains, beaches, wineries, golf, and seasonal outdoor recreation. It combines the pace and convenience of a larger centre with the charm of a close-knit community.
Facility Overview
Penticton Regional Hospital is a 158-bed acute care hospital serving the Okanagan Health Service Area and providing core medical and surgical specialty support to a population of roughly 90,000. The hospital delivers 24/7 emergency and trauma care, acute inpatient services, ambulatory and outpatient clinics, and diagnostic and paramedical services.
As a regional hospital and secondary referral centre for the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley, it works with a broad group of medical and surgical specialists. Imaging resources include on-site CT and part-time MRI access, and the site also has a seven-bed ICU. The hospital additionally acts as a referral centre for hematology and transfusion medicine for smaller hospitals in Oliver and Princeton.
In 2019, the first phase of the David E. Kampe Tower opened, bringing a new ambulatory care centre, surgical services centre, 84 inpatient beds in single-patient rooms, a medical device reprocessing unit, and space for the UBC Faculty of Medicine Program. A second phase was planned to expand the emergency department substantially.
Role Summary
The hospital is looking for a General Pathologist (AP/CP) to join a pathology team of 4.8 FTE. The work includes a broad general pathology practice, collaboration with local clinical teams, and participation in quality assurance and teaching for medical and laboratory learners.
Practice Scope
The group handles about 10,000 surgical pathology cases per year (17,000 LFE), around 100 bone marrow biopsies annually, about 500 cytopathology cases per year, and roughly 50 autopsy cases per year. Most work is paid under the provincial contract, while additional fee-for-service billing may be available for bone marrows and coroner autopsies.
The pathology team works closely with local physicians and surgical services and plays an important role in the wider diagnostic process.
Ideal Candidate
The preferred applicant is an experienced general pathologist. Additional experience in dermatopathology, breast pathology, or gastrointestinal pathology would be an advantage. Strong people skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with hospital and laboratory colleagues are essential.
Leadership Development
Physicians interested in leadership growth may be eligible to explore the NAVIG8 Emerging Physician Leaders Program, which offers structured development for doctors moving toward leadership roles early in their careers.
Compensation and Support
Compensation is through a clinical service contract with remuneration based on the provincially negotiated grid level. Relocation funding of $9,000 to $15,000 is available. This relocation assistance applies to 1.0 FTE positions and depends on the move location and eligible receipts. Part-time roles may qualify for prorated reimbursement; details should be confirmed with the medical staff recruiter. Incentives may change, and current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.
Additional Information
The opportunity is described as a place to live, work, and enjoy the region while serving the local community.
Terms: Clinical Service Contract.
