Role overview
The Utility Worker supports the dependable operation, upkeep, protection, and overall condition of pipelines, hydrants, valves, and related water-system components.
Compensation and benefits
The posted pay rate is $29.96 per hour. This role may also qualify for annual incentive pay and negotiated wage increases under the collective bargaining agreement, with opportunities for ongoing pay progression.

Key duties
- Carry out all job tasks with a strong focus on safety for coworkers and the public.
- Set up barricades and warning lights around work areas and direct traffic when needed.
- Confirm that work locations are secured before leaving.
- Read system maps and locate company assets in the field, including removing and installing water meters.
- Examine, take apart, and repair faulty or damaged control components in water distribution systems using hand and power tools.
- Break pavement with tools such as an air hammer, hand-dig trenches for pipe or service line work, and position pipe sections, valves, and fittings.
- Handle and move equipment and materials weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Backfill excavations using compaction equipment on dirt, crusted stone, and cold-mix surfaces, and operate a small backhoe when required.
- Read meters and make sure readings are captured accurately.
- Inspect meters, valves, hydrants, and pipes to identify leaks or equipment issues.
- Use wrenches and similar tools to tighten pipe connections and reduce leakage.
- Use technology to complete requisitions and reports and keep service records current.
- Work independently or alongside other team members as assigned.
- Take on additional duties as needed.
Skills and knowledge
The role requires practical knowledge of the service area’s geography, comfort working across changing terrain and weather, understanding of company policies and safety procedures, and awareness of confined-space regulations.
Education and experience
A high school diploma or GED is required. The candidate must also be able to operate company vehicles and equipment needed to complete assigned work, and have 5 years of experience as a Utility Worker.
Work environment
This is a typical outdoor position.
