Construction Inspector

Position Overview

The City of Moreno Valley is recruiting a Construction Inspector to support public works and capital improvement projects. This field-based role is responsible for making sure construction work follows approved plans, technical specifications, safety rules, and applicable codes and regulations. The inspector works with city staff, contractors, engineers, utility companies, developers, and property owners to help projects move forward properly while protecting public interests.

The role includes inspecting construction sites, checking materials and workmanship, monitoring contractor performance, keeping detailed records, carrying out field tests and inspections, and preparing project documentation and reports.

Ideal Candidate

The city is looking for someone with strong technical knowledge of construction methods, materials, and regulations across government levels. The ideal person has practical experience inspecting public infrastructure and large-scale projects, understands engineering fundamentals and relevant codes, and can identify compliance issues by reviewing plans and observing work in the field.

This person should communicate well with contractors, engineers, project managers, and members of the public. They should be organized, accurate in documentation, professional, and able to exercise sound judgment when enforcing standards and resolving construction-related concerns. A customer-focused, adaptable attitude is important in this public service role.

Minimum and Desirable Qualifications

A suitable background for this position includes a high school diploma or GED, along with either two years of construction inspection experience or six years of trade experience on major public works construction projects. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.

About the Public Works Department

The Public Works Department handles public works administration, city engineering, upkeep of city facilities within street rights-of-way, design and construction of city-led capital improvements, traffic facility administration, and electrical service delivery for new residential, commercial, and industrial development. It also supports related activities tied to these services.

Recruitment Timeline

The first application review is planned for Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The recruitment closes at 5:00 p.m. PST on July 21, 2026. A 2% base salary increase is scheduled to begin in the first full pay period after July 1, 2026.

Selection Process

Applications and supplemental materials will be screened after the posting closes. Candidates who meet the required and preferred qualifications may move forward in the hiring process, and all applicants will be notified of their status by email.

The process may include an application screening, a self-recorded video appraisal interview, and a technical interview focused on job-related knowledge, problem-solving, and core competencies. The city may adjust the selection steps based on department needs, and any changes will be communicated to candidates.

After the appraisal stage, Human Resources may create an eligible list of candidates who can be referred for selection interviews for current and future vacancies.
