Role Overview
The Centre Region Council of Governments’ Regional Fire Protection Program is looking for a forward-thinking, collaborative, and community-focused leader with background in fire, rescue, HazMat operations, and administration for the Fire Director / Chief of Department role.
This leadership position serves a high-performing combination fire service supporting more than 93,000 residents across the Centre Region, including Penn State University. The area is covered by the well-established Alpha Volunteer Fire Company, which handles over 1,500 incidents each year. The selected candidate will play a central role in guiding the future of regional public safety while working alongside career staff, volunteers, elected officials, and community partners.
Core Responsibilities
The role focuses on long-term strategy, operational leadership, and coordination across the region’s fire protection framework.
- Direct strategic planning and service delivery across the region.
- Maintain operational readiness and ensure standards of cover are met.
- Manage budgets, capital planning, and allocation of resources.
- Develop and sustain strong working relationships with volunteers, employees, elected officials, and partner organizations.
- Support and reinforce the integrated combination fire service model through cooperative leadership.
- Act as the representative for the Regional Fire Protection Program in regional, municipal, and public settings.
Required Qualifications
- A BS/BA in Fire Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 10 years of fire service experience, including 5 years at the Chief, Assistant Chief, or an equivalent level.
- Completion of ICS 300/400, NIMS 800, and Pro Board Fire Officer III.
- Ability to establish residency and satisfy all other hiring conditions.
