Role Overview

As a vital member of the Finance team, the Controller manages daily accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls across all US and international entities, ensuring the accuracy and GAAP compliance of financial data. This role requires a holistic approach to review financial results and billing to detect and resolve errors proactively. The Controller bridges financial ownership back into the accounting function, partnering closely with the Fractional CFO and executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the monthly close process delivering timely and accurate financial statements including P&L, balance sheets, and cash flow.
Continuously improve close timelines, accuracy, and documentation.
Conduct thorough reviews of results, billing, and key reports to identify anomalies early.
Prepare GAAP-compliant consolidated financial statements with intercompany eliminations.
Maintain and optimize chart of accounts and general ledger accuracy.
Oversee billing accuracy and coordinate with IT on finance-related systems.
Manage accounts receivable, collections, and credit risk escalation.
Supervise accounts payable processes, vendor data, purchase orders, and compliance.
Oversee domestic and international payroll in collaboration with the company's PEO.
Establish and monitor inventory accounting practices for reseller/drop-ship models.
Lead monthly consolidation involving international entities and external providers.
Strengthen internal controls and approval workflows within NetSuite.
Support audits, reviews, tax filings, and compliance activities.
Maintain strict confidentiality handling sensitive financial and employee information.

Strategic Leadership

Collaborate with the Fractional CFO on financial strategy and forecasting.
Provide transparent reporting on revenue, margins, and client concentration.
Maintain rolling cash flow forecasts and consolidated cash visibility.
Support budgeting and variance analysis.
Supervise internal accounting staff and external accounting relationships.
Enhance NetSuite utilization for robust reporting and workflow automation.
Develop job costing and profitability analyses for service projects.
Establish strong relationships with financial partners and resolve issues effectively.
Identify and communicate financial risks and opportunities proactively.
Prepare detailed financial records compliant with audit and regulatory standards.
Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes through automation and system enhancements.
Conduct analytical reviews of financial statements to uncover and resolve unusual trends.
Research complex accounting matters and document technical conclusions under US GAAP.

First Year Objectives

Assume responsibility for the monthly close process, enhancing quality and timeliness.
Standardize financial reporting across all entities.
Enhance internal controls and approval workflows in NetSuite.
Improve inventory accounting and reporting frameworks.
Partner with the Fractional CFO to establish reliable cash flow forecasting.
Foster productive relationships with outsourced accounting teams globally.
Decrease executive-level involvement in routine accounting through stronger finance ownership.

Qualifications and Skills

7 to 10+ years of advanced accounting and finance experience, including roles as Controller or senior accountant.
Experience in privately or closely held mid-market companies, preferably family-owned.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or public accounting background strongly preferred.
Proficiency with ERP systems, especially NetSuite, including reporting and workflow building; advanced Excel and Google Suite skills.
Strong knowledge of US GAAP financial reporting, ASC 606 revenue recognition, and multi-entity accounting.
Expertise in preparing audit-ready books and managing international consolidations.
Experience in inventory accounting for reseller/distribution models with controls and reconciliation procedures.
Understanding of multi-state sales and indirect tax, nexus, and tax compliance coordination.
Proven ability building and managing internal controls, segregation of duties, and approval frameworks.
Competence in AI tool usage aligned with company policies, balancing automation with accountability for outputs.
Excellent judgment, discretion, and communication abilities to explain finances clearly to non-finance personnel.
Ability to work independently in remote settings while maintaining strong team connections.
Prior leadership of accounting teams, including staff development and managing deliverables.
Familiarity with foreign currency translation and multi-currency consolidation.
