Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of forensic science principles, methodologies, materials, standards, and equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable scientific fields such as chemistry, physics, biochemistry, physiology, zoology, botany, statistics, and photography related to forensic science.
- Familiarity with common evidence types including narcotics, poisons, trace evidence, firearms, and bodily fluids.
- Knowledge of legal regulations concerning evidence handling, criminal procedure, and related crimes.
- Strong laboratory safety practices and effective customer service principles.
Abilities
- Carry out complex chemical and instrumental laboratory analyses accurately and safely.
- Operate forensic laboratory instruments such as microscopes, gas chromatograph-mass spectrometers, and DNA extraction robots.
- Interpret and apply relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing physical evidence.
- Build and maintain professional working relationships throughout various work interactions.
- Enforce safety protocols, particularly regarding hazardous substances.
- Prepare and evaluate detailed reports and correspondence.
- Provide expert testimony in judicial proceedings.
- Uphold ethical standards and manage stressful situations professionally.
- Communicate effectively in spoken and written form.
- Organize and prioritize assignments efficiently while maintaining accurate records and confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, pharmacology, biology, microbiology, criminalistics/forensic science emphasizing natural or physical sciences, or a closely related science field.
- Completion of at least 8 semester or 12 quarter units in general chemistry or biology courses.
- A master’s degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or related fields can substitute for one year of experience for Levels II through IV.
Additional Requirements
- Background and criminal history checks will be performed, including fingerprinting; felony or relevant misdemeanor convictions may disqualify candidates unless mitigating factors are present.
- Valid California Driver License (Class C or higher) required at appointment.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, sit for long durations during lab work or scene examinations; manual dexterity to handle equipment and evidence; ability to lift items up to 50 pounds; distinguish visual characteristics such as color and shape.
- Willingness to work under potentially unpleasant conditions including exposure to extreme weather, foul odors, biohazards, and during irregular hours including holidays and weekends.
- Successful completion of competency and annual proficiency testing is mandatory before and during casework.
Probation and Application Details
- Probationary period is twelve months.
