Overview
This role is dedicated to the testing and evaluation of fiber optic communication components to ensure they meet recognized international standards. The engineer contributes to maintaining the laboratory's accreditation status, supports quality management initiatives, and drives the development of innovative testing methods, all while guaranteeing precise and timely reporting of results.
Primary Duties
- Conduct tests and analyses on fiber optic cables, optical fibers, connectors, patch cords, closures, and passive optical devices.
- Perform optical, mechanical, environmental, and durability assessments based on IEC, ISO, Telcordia (GR), and ITU-T standards.
- Operate and maintain a range of laboratory equipment including OTDR devices, Optical Power Meters, Light Sources, Spectrum Analyzers, Environmental Chambers, Tensile and Compression Testing Machines, and aging test apparatus.
- Interpret test data and produce comprehensive technical documentation.
- Develop, validate, and implement new testing procedures within the lab.
- Assist with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation processes such as method validation, uncertainty analysis, proficiency evaluations, and internal auditing.
- Conduct calibration checks on instruments and coordinate external calibration services.
- Investigate and rectify any non-conforming testing outcomes, applying corrective and preventive strategies.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety, quality, and environmental standards.
- Maintain meticulous laboratory records and quality management documentation.
- Offer technical assistance to clients and internal teams.
- Participate in the assessment and adoption of new lab equipment and technologies.
- Engage in research and development activities aimed at expanding testing capabilities.
Educational and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Telecommunications, Electronics Engineering, or closely related fields.
- 2 to 5 years of experience in fiber optic testing, telecom laboratories, or testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) services.
- Experience in ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory environments is advantageous.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of fiber optic communication systems and optical loss measurements.
- Proficiency in OTDR analysis and fault detection.
- Knowledge of international standards including IEC, ISO, Telcordia (GR), and ITU-T.
- Familiarity with laboratory quality management systems and calibration methods.
- Proficiency with technical report writing and Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting abilities and keen attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Fluency in English is required; Arabic language skills are a plus.
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) from FOA.
- BICSI Certification.
- ISO/IEC 17025 Internal Auditor qualification.
- ISO 9001 Internal Auditor certification is desirable.
