Role Description

As a Materials Engineering Technologist, you will be responsible for conducting various laboratory tests and progressively mastering all procedures performed within the lab environment. You will operate comfortably with industry standards such as ASTM, ASME, CSA, NACE, API, and AWS, ensuring awareness of test outcomes and their conformance to applicable codes. It is essential to promptly report any test failures to supervisors.

You will independently organize your daily testing schedule based on workflow priorities and deadlines while maintaining a clean, professional workspace. Strict adherence to the ISO 17025 quality management system is required. Responsibilities also include maintaining and performing scheduled upkeep on testing equipment, collaborating with colleagues and clients to enhance processes and resolve technical concerns, and complying with all company safety, environmental, and quality policies.

Additional duties may include managing special projects and assignments as needed.

Required Qualifications

A post-secondary diploma or degree in Materials Engineering Technology, Welding Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline is mandatory. Candidates must either hold registration or be eligible for registration with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET). While 3-5 years of relevant lab experience is preferred, it is considered an advantage rather than a requirement.

Technical proficiency includes the ability to interpret and follow detailed work instructions accurately and safely, competence in computer applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, and familiarity with image analysis software is considered a plus. Candidates should demonstrate project management capabilities, excellent communication skills both written and verbal, effective time management, keen attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

This role may require working extended hours or shifts and occasional travel to other company or client sites. Strong hand-eye coordination for handling samples and equipment, sound judgment to identify and solve routine issues, and the capacity to work efficiently under pressure are critical. Additional technical skills related to mechanical aptitude, instrumentation and control, and AutoCAD are beneficial.
