Position Overview
This role involves providing comprehensive functional and technical support for Network Information Systems within the City of Albuquerque's enterprise infrastructure. Responsibilities include planning, deploying, and maintaining communication networks such as wireless networks, LANs, MANs, WANs, and VoIP systems. The engineer will manage remote enterprise setups, troubleshoot issues, oversee network management systems, and ensure network security. This position requires experience in network hardware and software and the ability to work independently on various network, video, and telephony projects, offering informed recommendations on network products and configurations.
Key Duties
- Plan, forecast, design, implement, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, wireless networks, and devices like IP cameras, wireless access points, and VoIP equipment.
- Continuously monitor and optimize network performance and security, scheduling maintenance and generating reports based on historical data.
- Conduct preventive maintenance to minimize downtime, including system health checks, security audits, and hardware reviews.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network and user issues to enhance system performance.
- Liaise with vendors for procurement of components, technical support, and services related to network expansion and upkeep.
- Document all changes, modifications, and revisions to network components, wiring, and facilities; prepare necessary status reports.
- Evaluate new network hardware proposals to ensure compatibility with existing systems.
- Apply proper work methods complying with standards and safety practices.
- Enforce security policies for network access and protect city information resources; manage user access permissions.
- Develop detailed project documentation and solutions including product selection, licensing, software, and installation plans as needed.
- Design and implement network information management systems and develop operational procedures for system control and recovery.
- Perform complex preventive maintenance to avoid major network issues and generate analytical reports to guide maintenance schedules.
- Support project management activities related to city construction and remodeling, including cost estimation, proposal preparation, vendor evaluation, and recommendation.
Additional Activities
- Participate in professional groups and stay updated on advancements in network engineering.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in management information systems, computer science, or engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of two years of experience in network, VoIP, or wireless communications.
Additional Requirements
- Valid New Mexico Driver's License or ability to obtain one by hiring date.
- Obtain a City Operator's Permit within six months of hire.
- For Aviation assignments, qualification and maintenance of a Sunport Access Control Card per Aviation Department and TSA guidelines.
- Successful security background check by U.S. Customs & Border Protection, if applicable.
Working Conditions
- Work environments include office spaces, computer and telecommunications rooms; exposure to screens and occasional noise, cold, and inclement weather.
- Must be able to travel between multiple work sites as required.
- Physical demands include the ability to sit or stand for extended durations, lift equipment over 50 pounds, and work at height (catwalks, roofs, ladders).
