Role overview

Netflix Animation Studios is focused on creating ambitious, immersive animated films that resonate globally. The studio is growing a creative community across multiple international locations, and this position sits at the center of that effort.

As Technical Supervisor, you will serve as the main technical leader on an animated feature film. You will shape the show’s technical direction with creative leadership, adapt pipelines, tools, and workflows to match the production’s artistic and technical demands, and make sure the team delivers at a high standard while scaling effectively.

Creative responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director, Co-Director, Production Designer, Art Director, VFX Supervisor, and other creative leaders.
  • Learn the production’s creative priorities, review process, challenges, and quality expectations.
  • Translate story goals, visual style, and creative intent into practical technical guidance for the show.

Technical responsibilities

  • Define and oversee the technical plan for the production so it stays aligned with the creative vision.
  • Direct Associate Technical Supervisors and TDs so effort stays centered on the highest-priority issues.
  • Serve as the key escalation contact for complex problems that affect multiple departments.
  • Improve the pipeline and help build solutions that can scale across the studio.

Bidding and scheduling

  • Partner with Technical Project Managers, Production, Solutions Engineering Managers, and Associate Technical Supervisors to estimate technical scope and timelines.
  • Review project requirements, spot risks and inefficiencies, and recommend better approaches where needed.
  • Make sure staffing, development time, and scheduling plans are realistic and support on-time delivery.

Talent and performance management

  • Set the tone through your own leadership and help prioritize Associate Technical Supervisors’ work so it supports both show needs and pipeline goals.
  • Help maintain a respectful, team-oriented environment across production and technology groups.
  • Work with Artist Management, Production, Technical Talent, and Learning & Development on casting, mentoring, training, feedback, and hiring for Associate Technical Supervisors and TDs.

Stakeholder engagement and collaboration

  • Communicate technical plans, initiatives, and objectives clearly to production teams.
  • Encourage innovation and knowledge sharing across departments.
  • Build trust through clear communication, adaptability, good judgment, and early conflict resolution.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience on large-scale animated features, animated TV series, and/or VFS feature films, supported by prior project work and/or a reel or portfolio.
  • Hands-on success solving creative problems with technical approaches, plus strong knowledge of rendering workflows and pipeline development across the full animation pipeline.
  • Strong technical ability, including Python or other scripting experience, along with solid familiarity with DCC tools such as Maya, Houdini, Mari, and Nuke, and production tracking systems like FlowPT or similar tools.
  • Proven leadership, strong interpersonal communication in both speaking and writing, and the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Excellent planning and prioritization skills, with the capacity to manage multiple workstreams while keeping a close eye on detail.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, with the judgment to balance immediate needs against long-term quality.
  • A degree or related qualification is preferred but not mandatory.

Location and work arrangement

This position is based in Sydney, Australia and follows a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office.
