Role Overview
The API Testing Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring the correctness, performance, and security of RESTful and SOAP APIs. This position involves thorough validation through multiple testing stages and close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as developers, architects, business analysts, and quality assurance professionals to deliver high-quality software products.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret business and technical requirements along with API documentation to plan testing strategies.
- Develop and implement detailed API test plans and cases covering various testing types including functional, integration, regression, system, and end-to-end scenarios.
- Validate the behavior of REST and SOAP web services, confirming request and response payload accuracy, business logic adherence, and data integrity.
- Verify API response codes, headers, and implement authentication and authorization verifications.
- Perform database validations to confirm backend data correctness.
- Identify, log, and track defects efficiently using bug tracking systems.
- Automate API testing processes and seamlessly integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines.
- Conduct performance, load, stress, and scalability testing on APIs.
- Engage actively in Agile and Scrum ceremonies and communicate testing status reports.
- Work closely with development and DevOps teams to ensure smooth release validation.
Required Skills and Tools
- Expertise in API testing for RESTful and SOAP services, including microservices-based applications.
- Proficient with API testing tools such as Postman, Swagger/OpenAPI, SoapUI, and Insomnia.
- Strong hands-on experience with functional, regression, smoke, integration, system, and end-to-end testing methodologies.
- Competency in validating JSON and XML payloads, schema adherence, and request/response verification.
- Good command over SQL for thorough database testing and backend validation across multiple databases like Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
- Knowledge of automation frameworks and tools including Rest Assured, Postman Collections with Newman, Selenium, Karate Framework, and Apache HttpClient.
- Programming experience with Java, Python, and JavaScript.
- Familiarity with security testing concepts such as OAuth 2.0, JWT, API keys, basic authentication, authorization checks, OWASP API Security Top 10, and data encryption validation.
- Experience performing API performance tests using tools like JMeter, LoadRunner, k6, and Gatling.
- Usage of CI/CD and DevOps platforms including Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, and GitLab CI/CD alongside version control tools like Git and Bitbucket.
- Knowledge of test management tools such as JIRA, Azure DevOps, HP ALM, and API documentation tools like Swagger and Postman Documentation.
- Preferably experience with monitoring solutions such as Splunk, Kibana, and Grafana.
Qualifications and Additional Preferences
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline is essential.
- Strong analytic and problem-solving abilities coupled with excellent communication and stakeholder interaction skills.
- Experience operating within Agile/Scrum frameworks.
- Desirable qualifications include Microservices testing expertise, cloud platform knowledge (AWS, Azure, GCP), CI/CD experience, ISTQB certification, and familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Industry experience in sectors such as Banking, Insurance, Healthcare, Telecom, or Retail is advantageous.
