Role overview
Jacobs is looking for an Archaeologist to support archaeological and cultural heritage work across infrastructure projects in Ireland, with occasional support to UK teams. The role sits within a growing Archaeology & Heritage function and focuses on integrating heritage needs into project design, assessment, and delivery.
You will contribute technical expertise to mitigation planning, environmental assessment inputs, reporting, and site-based oversight. This position offers a mix of office-based analysis, fieldwork, and cross-functional collaboration in a busy infrastructure environment.
Key duties
- Assist with archaeological and heritage assessments, documentation, and record keeping.
- Monitor construction and development activity on site to ensure archaeological mitigation is carried out correctly and to the required professional, contractual, and regulatory standards.
- Prepare desk-based assessments and heritage studies to support planning, environmental review, and project progression.
- Carry out site inspections, walkover surveys, and visits to archives and topographic collections.
- Draft and support Cultural Heritage chapters for EIARs, including impact evaluation, mitigation planning, and coordination with other specialists.
- Check and quality review fieldwork outputs such as excavation reports, watching briefs, and survey deliverables.
- Gather, assess, and combine information from GIS, historical sources, and previous investigations to strengthen conclusions and reporting.
- Work alongside multidisciplinary project teams across a range of infrastructure assignments.
- Provide support to UK-based colleagues when needed.
Required experience and background
- A degree in Archaeology, Heritage Management, or a closely related subject.
- Professional experience in commercial archaeology, consultancy, or heritage assessment.
- Hands-on experience in archaeological fieldwork and report preparation.
- Working knowledge of Irish planning and heritage legislation.
- Ability to travel for site work throughout Ireland and occasionally to the UK.
- Strong written communication, analytical thinking, and organisational ability.
- Comfort working in multidisciplinary teams and balancing multiple priorities.
- Good teamwork and interpersonal communication skills.
- Membership of, or progress toward membership of, a relevant professional organisation such as IAI or CIfA.
- Experience using GIS and spatial data analysis tools.
Additional qualities valued
- A genuine interest in heritage and archaeology within modern infrastructure delivery.
- A practical, solution-oriented approach to both field and consultancy work.
- Ability to move between office tasks and site-based responsibilities across several projects.
Benefits and working arrangements
- 33 days of annual leave each year, inclusive of public holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave.
- Pension provision with combined contributions of up to 14%.
- Flexible working options, including a 5-day or 4.5-day workweek.
- Life cover equal to 4 times annual salary.
- Group Income Protection covering 75% of salary in the event of long-term illness or injury.
- 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme for employees and their families.
- Ability to buy up to 80 extra hours of annual leave.
- Employee share purchase scheme.
- Professional membership fees paid after 1 year.
- Education support through funded or partly funded tuition.
- Bike to Work scheme, TaxSaver tickets, and a Sports & Social Club.
