Role summary
Hurricane Capital is hiring a Controller to lead and improve the firm’s accounting, financial reporting, fund accounting, and internal control framework. The role is central to protecting the financial integrity of the firm and its investment platform, while working closely with senior leadership, investment teams, operations, fund administrators, auditors, tax advisors, and other outside partners.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, prior exposure to hedge funds or other alternative investment businesses, and the ability to contribute both strategically and hands-on in a scaling environment.
Compensation and work arrangement
Location: New York, NY. Employment type: Full-time. Work setup: On-site / hybrid, subject to firm policy. Compensation: USD 50,000 to USD 200,000 depending on experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Handle day-to-day accounting activities, including the general ledger, accounts payable, expense management, accruals, reconciliations, and cash transactions.
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles to support accurate and timely reporting.
- Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
- Ensure adherence to relevant accounting standards, regulatory obligations, and internal firm policies.
- Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting.
- Review fund accounting outputs such as NAV calculations, capital account statements, investor allocations, and financial statements.
- Work with third-party fund administrators to confirm reporting is accurate, timely, and complete.
- Track fund-level expenses, management fees, incentive allocations, and related accounting items.
- Support investor reporting, capital activity, and ad hoc fund analysis.
- Assist with the preparation and review of annual audited financial statements.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, legal counsel, administrators, and other service providers.
- Help with annual audits, tax filings, regulatory reporting, and compliance-related financial requests.
- Maintain well-organized support for accounting judgments, reconciliations, and reporting work.
- Contribute to scalable process design that supports future platform growth.
- Work with investment, operations, risk, compliance, and leadership teams to provide financial insight and operational support.
- Identify opportunities to improve reporting quality, automate workflows, and strengthen data integrity.
- Support special projects such as new fund launches, manager onboarding, system rollouts, and strategic financial analysis.
- Help build a high-quality finance function that can support a growing institutional investment platform.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- CPA is strongly preferred.
- Experience in hedge funds, private equity, asset management, fund administration, public accounting, or broader financial services.
- Solid understanding of GAAP, financial statement preparation, fund accounting, capital accounts, and investment products.
- Prior work with fund administrators, auditors, tax advisors, and similar external partners.
- Strong Excel capability and comfort using accounting, reporting, and financial systems.
- Good analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both finance and investment professionals.
- Strong integrity, sound judgment, and a proactive ownership mindset.
- Preferred background includes prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Fund Controller, Fund Accounting Manager, or senior accounting professional in alternative investments.
- Experience with multi-manager platforms, hedge funds, managed accounts, or complex investment structures is preferred.
- Familiarity with management company accounting in addition to fund accounting is preferred.
- Experience improving accounting processes, implementing systems, or building scalable financial controls is preferred.
