Data Journalist / Housing Analyst

About the Opportunity

ResiClub is a news and research platform dedicated to covering the U.S. housing market and homebuilding industry. We are seeking a Data Journalist / Housing Analyst to oversee and enhance the ResiClub Terminal, our primary data product that powers our housing market coverage. This role uniquely combines expertise in data engineering, housing market research, and data journalism, involving responsibilities such as ensuring data accuracy, deploying data pipelines, and transforming raw housing data into informative charts, rankings, and stories that are practical and engaging.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain the ResiClub Terminal by sourcing data, updating datasets regularly, validating data accuracy, and standardizing methodologies across over 100 housing market metrics.
• Create insightful data-driven articles on various housing market topics including inventory, pricing, migration trends, homebuilding, affordability, investor activity, and build-to-rent sectors.
• Develop and sustain data pipelines using R and Python to handle substantial housing datasets, producing results segmented by national, state, metropolitan, county, and ZIP-code tiers.
• Design and conduct original research, including drafting survey questions, structuring response options, administering surveys, analyzing results, and producing charts and publishable insights.
• Analyze market trends through R/Python and Excel, translating data findings into visualizations, rankings, written insights, presentations, and reports.
• Monitor the housing industry by reviewing SEC filings from public housing companies, extracting insights on strategies, demand, expenses, incentives, and guidance to support research write-ups.

Candidate Profile

• Experienced in R and/or Python for data processing, complemented by proficiency in Excel for analysis and modeling.
• Adept at handling large, unstructured datasets, converting them into clean, reliable, and reproducible outputs.
• Strong writing abilities, capable of crafting clear and accurate narratives from complex datasets.
• A sound understanding of housing market concepts such as inventory, pricing, affordability, construction, migration, and investor activity, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
• Adaptability to work effectively within a startup environment.
• Familiarity with analyzing SEC filings or financial disclosures is advantageous.
• Experience in survey design and data analysis is a bonus.
• Exceptional attention to detail to ensure data accuracy as housing industry stakeholders depend on this information for critical decisions.
• Self-motivated and able to manage projects independently from initial data acquisition to publication.
