About the Role

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a prestigious research institution known for its vibrant multicultural environment, seeks a passionate English Language Learning (ELL) Instructor. The selected candidate will aid postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and technical staff in enhancing their English communication abilities, accommodating both everyday interactions and professional contexts.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver individual and group lessons on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and essential life skills such as shopping, automobile purchasing, and navigating medical services.
• Tailor teaching approaches to accommodate diverse learning needs, aiming to boost conversational fluency and learner confidence.
• Utilize primarily printed instructional materials, supplemented occasionally with online resources.
• Offer personalized feedback in an encouraging, judgment-free setting.
• Evaluate and provide constructive feedback on scientific presentations and rehearsal sessions.
• Address cultural and practical challenges learners face, including guidance on daily life activities, relationship development, and integration into the community.
• Create and implement specialized instructional tools and activities catering to a diverse learner population.
• Provide English training support to non-scientific personnel such as housekeeping and catering staff.

Qualifications and Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in English, TESOL, Education, or a closely related discipline is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience teaching English to non-native speakers, ideally within a multicultural academic environment.
• In-depth understanding of the unique needs faced by English Language Learners in both scientific and non-scientific roles.
• Outstanding communication abilities with a commitment to fostering a welcoming and effective learning atmosphere.
• Flexibility to adapt teaching methodologies to various learner needs and styles.
• Spanish language skills are advantageous but not mandatory.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly wage for this position ranges from $30.00 to $33.50, reflective of qualifications, experience, and internal benchmarks.
