Job summary
Purdue University is hiring probationary firefighters to support a campus-based emergency response program in West Lafayette, Indiana. In this role, you will respond to fire incidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials events, and rescue situations within a large university setting. The department provides advanced life support-level EMS, operates two transport ambulances and an ALS-certified engine, and ensures all staff are trained in airport rescue and firefighting, hazmat response, and multiple technical rescue disciplines.
The Purdue Fire Department serves the full Purdue University–West Lafayette campus, including the airport, athletics, and major university events. Firefighters are also involved in routine training, fire prevention, and public education efforts that help keep the campus community prepared and safe.
Hiring process and key dates
Purdue University is accepting applications for two firefighter openings during the period from 7/6/2025 through 08/2/2026. Candidates who meet the minimum criteria and finish the application steps will be moved into the selection process and will receive an email with scheduling details for the first interview. Only the strongest applicants will continue past the first round. A valid CPAT card must be shown at the first interview.

What the role involves
As part of the fire department, you will participate in emergency response operations, company-level training, fire prevention efforts, and educational outreach. The position requires working in a high-responsibility environment where you may need to provide both firefighting and emergency medical support.
Education, certifications, and qualifications
- High school diploma or high school equivalency (HSE)
- Indiana Firefighter I and II certification within 12 months of hire
- Indiana or nationally registered EMT certification, or the ability to complete it within 6 months of hire
- Current Indiana paramedic license or NREMT-P
- Hazardous Materials Technician certification already completed, or ability to finish it within 12 months of hire
- Valid CPAT card before the first interview
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license
Physical and professional requirements
- Ability to perform all firefighter and EMT/paramedic duties in both physical and mental terms
- Capability to frequently lift and carry 50–80 lbs, occasionally lift 100 lbs or more, and drag up to 165 lbs
- Completion of the Purdue Firefighters Physical Abilities Test every year
- Successful physical and psychological screening before employment
- Background investigation before hiring
- Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Strong customer service awareness and a professional approach to public interaction
- Clear verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer literacy
Preferred background
- National or Indiana EMT-B certification
- National or Indiana paramedic license
- Indiana Firefighter I/II certification
Compensation and benefits
Pay is determined through a competitive salary matrix based on job title, EMS certification level, and years of service. For the current fiscal year, starting pay is $75,018.84 and the pension base is $81,463.20. Additional earnings may include longevity pay of up to $9,000 after 24 years of service and specialty pay of up to $3,000.
Qualified licensed Indiana paramedics or NREMT-Ps eligible for reciprocity may receive a $6,000 sign-on bonus, paid as $3,000 with the first paycheck and $3,000 after one year of service.
Benefits include paid vacation, floating holidays, paid sick leave, medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, retirement coverage through the Purdue Police Officers and Firefighters Pension, and a generous paid time off package.
