About the Role
Save the Children International in Kampala, Uganda, is seeking a dedicated Accountant to oversee financial operations impacting children's welfare worldwide. This role involves managing supplier payments, staff advances, liquidations, petty cash, mobile money wallets, and bank transactions, ensuring accurate record-keeping and compliance with policies. The Accountant will support budgeting, reporting, and audit facilitation as part of the country office finance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Comply with SCI finance policies, including the chart of accounts, for transaction processing.
- Manage and reconcile petty cash balances with strict adherence to internal controls.
- Record all transactions promptly including internal transfers, supplier payments, and refunds.
- Submit weekly GLACOS entries for review and integration into Agresso financial systems.
- Ensure sufficient funds across all cash accounts, including mobile money wallets, and coordinate bank signatories for payment approvals.
- Work closely with HR to monitor timely staff timesheet submissions and ensure budget codes are correctly assigned for effort reporting.
- Process weekly payments through Agresso, resolve bounced payments in coordination with supply chain and accounts teams, and manage TM5 payment approvals and updates.
- Maintain up-to-date supplier records on ProSave and Agresso systems and provide payment documentation for audits.
- Prepare quarterly VAT reports and ensure compliance with donor requirements alongside the field teams.
- Oversee timely submission of programmatic advances and reconcile tax schedules and balance sheet accounts weekly for accuracy.
- Administer shared cost allocation methodology by preparing appropriate journals and advising staff on cost allocations.
- Manage physical and electronic filing systems, including document scans and archival, facilitating easy document retrieval and audit readiness.
- Enforce internal controls over cash and bank transactions and support audit processes by providing required payment documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration (Accounting), Accounting, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in local languages and ability to engage directly with community groups is advantageous.
- Strong teamwork skills with cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in diverse environments.
- Willingness to travel, including to remote, challenging locations and occasionally work beyond regular hours during humanitarian responses.
- Excellent computer skills and documentation capabilities.
- Strong time management, planning ability, and commitment to organizational values.
