Stellenbeschreibung

About the opportunity

Oranga Tamariki is offering permanent Allied Support Worker positions for people who want to build their career while making a real difference for tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau. These roles have been created to strengthen day-to-day support for frontline Social Work teams and meet ongoing service needs across sites. Unlike earlier fixed-term versions, these appointments are designed to provide stable, long-term support within the workforce.

About the role

Allied Support Workers operate under the guidance of qualified Social Workers and their supervisors. The purpose of the role is to help create better outcomes for children, young people, and families by allowing Social Workers to focus on statutory responsibilities and professional practice.

This is a non-regulated support role. It is not a Social Worker training position, and it is not a para-social worker role. You will not carry a case load or perform social work duties.

The position involves supporting Social Workers through home visits, general administration, and the transportation of tamariki and rangatahi.

Key duties

  • Provide site-based support as needed, responding to the team’s daily operational priorities.
  • Help Social Workers record case notes and other information in CYRAS and related systems.
  • Transport tamariki and rangatahi safely between locations, including appointments, school, and sport activities.
  • Assist with the preparation and administrative coordination of Family Group Conferences.
  • Support the care of tamariki and rangatahi when they are out of school or waiting for placements.
  • Complete administrative tasks connected to placements and programme transitions.
  • Support children and young people at school, including helping them settle in or return after time away.
  • Carry out supervised contact and visitation work, including driving clients, monitoring visits, and writing contact notes.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, external partners, and stakeholders.
  • Be available for some weekend and after-hours work.

What you will bring

This role is high-trust and safety-critical, so strong judgement, resilience, and reliability are essential. The preferred candidate will bring a mix of the following experience, skills, and qualifications:

Experience and capabilities

  • Background supporting people in need within community settings.
  • Experience working alongside Māori and/or Pasifika communities.
  • Comfort and empathy when dealing with emotionally difficult situations.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication ability.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with peers and stakeholders.

Skills and knowledge

  • Clear written and spoken communication, along with strong people skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective under pressure.
  • Awareness of cross-cultural practice, especially tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ cultures.
  • Capability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Willingness to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi in day-to-day practice.
  • Intermediate competence with the Microsoft suite.

Qualifications and licence

  • A recognised qualification in social services is preferred.
  • A current full, clean driver’s licence is required, along with the willingness to drive Ministry vehicles.
  • Historic convictions may be considered individually.

What is on offer

The salary range starts at NZD 68,371 and goes up to NZD 75,501. You will also receive access to substantial training and professional development opportunities, along with a workplace committed to diversity, inclusion, and respect.

Application details

Applications close at 5:00 pm on Monday, 20 July 2026. Candidates are asked to submit a CV and covering letter. Existing Oranga Tamariki employees must apply using their Oranga Tamariki email login.

Recruitment is taking place across many vacancies throughout the country, so the hiring process may take longer than usual. Applicants are thanked in advance for their patience.

All candidates should be familiar with the organisation’s code of conduct, including expectations to attend work free from the influence of drugs and alcohol.
