Role Overview
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at MacDonald Illig Jones & Britton LLP holds a pivotal leadership role responsible for managing the firm's comprehensive business and operational activities. Reporting directly to the Managing Partner and the Management Committee, the COO anticipates organizational needs, aids strategic and financial planning, and ensures efficient management practices across the firm.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Management: Partner with the Chief Financial Officer to develop the annual operating budget. Conduct variance, profitability, rate analyses, and comprehensive financial reporting. Administer the firm's 401(k) plan along with other fiscal responsibilities.
- Human Resource Oversight: Supervise the Human Resources Manager and engage in staffing decisions, resource planning, employee evaluations, salary and benefits management, disciplinary protocols, and additional HR-related activities.
- Systems Oversight: Manage the IT team to address systems analysis, operational audits, cost-benefit evaluations, network infrastructure, data storage solutions, document management, and legal practice software optimization.
- Facilities Administration: Direct planning for office space, procurement, lease agreements, record storage, telecommunications, climate control systems, and coordination with the condominium association governing the building.
- General Management Duties: Oversee insurance policies and other broad managerial responsibilities. Prepare meeting agendas and participate actively in Firm, Partner, and Management Committee sessions.
- Practice Management Support: Collaborate with the Recruiting Committee to attract legal talent. Provide assistance with attorney business plans, workload assessments, and other practice group management tasks.
- Marketing Activities: Lead the Marketing Manager and contribute to client development initiatives, digital presence enhancements including the website, and efforts to improve the firm’s market visibility and brand image.
