Correctional Security Lieutenant

Overview

This role involves overseeing and managing the security program within a state adult correctional institution. The position is based at the Joseph Harp Correctional Center and requires supervising correctional security activities, ensuring the safety and order of the facility, and collaborating with law enforcement and administrative teams.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate security operations at the correctional facility, potentially serving as shift supervisor for multiple units or chief of security in smaller settings.
• Lead the correctional emergency response team by organizing training and coordinating tactical exercises.
• Conduct special investigations related to incidents occurring during shifts.
• Oversee security procedures including riot control, escape protocols, inmate counts, and contraband searches.
• Prepare staff schedules and maintain accurate records regarding personnel and inmates.
• Inspect staff fitness and proper attire at shift start; conduct periodic post inspections and prepare relevant operational reports.
• Act as liaison with local law enforcement, managing information sharing and court appearances.
• Participate in institutional administrative functions, contributing to policy and rule development.

Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum of three years experience in correctional or security work within government or private agencies.
• Must be at least 20 years old with additional age limits as determined by the Director of Corrections.
• Possession of 30 semester hours from an accredited college/university or a high school diploma/GED plus certified completion of an approved training course within the first six months of employment.
• Applicants must hold a valid driver's license and be able to work any shift or day.

Additional Requirements and Legal Conditions

• Must be of good moral character and successfully complete a training program approved by the State Board of Corrections before working alone.
• Annual physical exams as per department guidelines are mandatory.
• Subject to drug testing.
• Candidates cannot have disqualifying convictions such as certain felonies, domestic violence misdemeanors, or offenses requiring sex offender registration, unless fully pardoned.
• Certain positions may be designated as peace officer roles requiring specific certification and training.
• The Department considers some roles safety sensitive under applicable state laws.

Compensation and Employment Details

This is a full-time regular position with a salary of $53,268.80 per year. The employment is onsite at the Joseph Harp Correctional Center under the Department of Corrections.
