Job Purpose

The Design & Technology Technician focuses on Resistant Materials, Product Design, and practical workshop activities within the Design & Technology department. The role supports teaching and learning for Key Stage 3, GCSE, and Post-16 students by preparing workshops, equipment, materials, and technology, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient facilitation of practical classes.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare workshops, machinery, tools, and resources for lessons involving timber, plastics, metals, and other materials.
• Organize materials for student projects and manage workshop consumables, PPE, and equipment setup.
• Assist with coursework, examinations, assessments, exhibitions, and moderation processes.
• Prepare CAD/CAM files and operate laser cutting, CNC routing, and 3D printing technologies.
• Support teachers and students during practical lessons, including manufacturing, prototyping, modeling, testing, and evaluation tasks.
• Promote safe working practices, enforce workshop procedures, and manage health, safety, and safeguarding standards.
• Conduct routine maintenance on machinery and equipment; maintain records and coordinate with external contractors for repairs.
• Oversee stock control for tools, machinery, and materials, ensuring efficient usage and minimal waste.
• Collaborate with staff and external providers, attend professional development, and contribute positively to the school community.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

• Proven experience in a Design & Technology workshop or similar technical support role.
• Strong understanding of workshop tools, machinery, materials, and safe manufacturing processes.
• Skilled in preparing materials and resources for practical education activities.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations applicable to workshop environments.
• Excellent organizational skills with experience in stock and inventory management.
• Ability to maintain precise records and effective communication skills.
• Capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team, with a commitment to student safeguarding.

Desirable Attributes:

• Previous experience within an educational setting.
• Familiarity supporting GCSE Design & Technology or Post-16 Product Design curricula.
• Hands-on experience with CAD/CAM technologies including laser cutting, CNC routing, and 3D printing.
• Technical qualification or relevant training related to workshop machinery and maintenance.
• Experience in procurement, supplier collaboration, and inventory control.
