Position Overview
This tenure-track, full-time faculty role at Hagerstown Community College involves delivering accessible, high-quality instruction and fostering student achievement through effective teaching, ongoing professional growth, scholarship, and service to the institution. Faculty members are integral to advancing the college’s mission and strategic objectives by engaging in teaching, curriculum assessment, student mentoring, shared governance, and community outreach during a 10-month contract with a 37.5-hour weekly commitment on campus.
Organizational Context
The faculty member will work within the Mathematics and Science division, focusing on the Associate of Science program with a Biology concentration. Key duties include curriculum development, student learning assessment, adjunct faculty support, and contributing to institutional service. The faculty reports to the Division Director and collaborates with peers and college stakeholders.
Core Responsibilities
- Prepare and deliver a full instructional load of 15 credits each fall and spring semester, maintaining at least 5 office hours weekly.
- Employ effective teaching strategies that align with course and program learning outcomes to engage and support student success.
- Design and implement assessments consistent with learning objectives at multiple educational levels and utilize results for continuous course and curriculum improvements.
- Continuously review and enhance curriculum by incorporating current disciplinary insights, emerging technologies, and best instructional methodologies.
- Maintain updated course materials in compliance with accessibility and legal standards using appropriate learning management systems.
- Foster clear communication and maintain regular, meaningful interactions with students, providing timely feedback on academic performance.
- Support and advise students in academic progress, program selection, transfer opportunities, and career pathways in collaboration with student support services.
- Accurately track and report student attendance and academic outcomes as required by institutional policies and deadlines.
- Engage in professional development activities such as new faculty orientation, technology training, conferences, publishing, additional coursework, and collaboration within the profession.
- Serve the college community through committee participation, adjunct faculty mentorship, program promotion, event involvement, and community engagement initiatives.
- Teach various day, evening, hybrid, or online courses primarily in introductory biology and anatomy & physiology sequences, along with other related courses like biotechnology, microbiology, and nutrition.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff on course material selection, curriculum reviews, outcome assessments, and learning platform maintenance to ensure educational consistency and student retention.
- Contribute input for divisional goals, budgeting, equipment maintenance, and strategic planning activities annually.
Education and Experience
The role requires a minimum of a master's degree in biology, life sciences, physiology, biotechnology, or closely related fields such as biomedical sciences, kinesiology, or STEM education. Holding a Ph.D. in Biology or related disciplines is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate foundational laboratory skills suitable for teaching program requirements and ideally bring clinical or research experience in related biological sciences. Experience with curriculum design, outcome assessment, data analysis, and grant processes is highly valued.
Skills and Abilities
- Preference for candidates with recent teaching experience at the undergraduate or community college level.
- Strong organizational, advising, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Competency in teaching methods and classroom management.
- Familiarity with online learning management systems and proprietary course content platforms.
