Role Overview
The Paralegal Manager role within LAC's legal department is a hybrid leadership and operational position focused on commercial real estate transactions, particularly those financed through low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC), tax-exempt bonds, HUD loans, and various local and state subsidies. The role entails hands-on transaction management across deal stages and leading a paralegal team of three to four members. Reporting to the Director of Legal Operations, this position collaborates closely with senior legal staff and external counsel. The role requires presence in the Midtown New York office three days a week.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and guide a team of paralegals by mentoring, reviewing their outputs, and fostering professional growth.
- Handle transaction duties independently while managing the team's overall deal workflow to ensure efficiency and quality.
- Assign workloads by balancing project complexity, deadlines, and individual skillsets.
- Use judgment to escalate transactional or team issues promptly.
- Develop and refine team processes to expedite deal progression.
- Lead paralegal onboarding and training to standardize quality and best practices.
- Draft and revise corporate documents such as entity formation papers, governance documents, operating agreements, partnership agreements, resolutions, and amendments.
- Review title, survey, and commitment documents and coordinate responses to counterparties.
- Conduct due diligence, coordinate transaction activities, and collaborate to successfully close affordable housing deals.
- Order due diligence certificates and materials from vendors and coordinate with title companies to finalize title policies.
- Utilize project management tools for planning, budgeting, and tracking progress on transactions.
- Monitor deal phases and communicate status and issues to relevant stakeholders.
- Prepare signature packets and coordinate signing by deal participants.
- Compile closing indices and binders, and manage follow-up post-closing matters.
- Conduct targeted research using legal and general research platforms.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Candidate Profile
- Proven leadership skills with experience managing and developing teams.
- Effective prioritization and workload assignment capabilities to manage shifting priorities/productivity without supervision.
- Commercial real estate transactional experience with strong corporate professionalism.
- Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Exceptional attention to detail ensuring accurate and high-quality documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for interaction at all organizational levels.
- Advanced document drafting and proofreading capabilities.
- Proactive problem-solving mindset with thorough follow-through on all tasks.
- Team player who supports the organization's mission-driven focus.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
- At least 7 years of commercial real estate and/or corporate paralegal experience within a corporate setting.
- Prior experience leading, mentoring, or supervising paralegal or legal support staff, including work allocation and quality review.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage commercial real estate transactions.
- Experience with affordable housing transactions, especially involving LIHTC, is strongly preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary ranges from $145,000 to $155,000 annually, subject to factors like work location, skills, experience, market conditions, and internal alignment. Besides salary, LAC offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
