Process/Project Engineer

Job Overview

The Process/Project Engineer plays a critical role in managing project development and execution alongside improving manufacturing process efficiency. This position involves engineering analysis aimed at enhancing product quality, equipment reliability, yield optimization, pollution management, workplace conditions, and energy efficiency. Key responsibilities include developing process flow diagrams (PFDs), preparing material balances, designing basic piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and supporting both process and product-related project development.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Deliver around-the-clock technical guidance and supervisory support to contractors and plant teams involved in assigned projects.
• Create detailed material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, and perform equipment calculations to support all projects at the Port Maitland facility.
• Lead projects as the project manager, overseeing development, implementation, budget control, and coordination of contractors and plant personnel involved.
• Engage in initiatives focused on environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
• Outline project scopes, estimate costs, obtain capital funding, supervise field activities, and oversee commissioning efforts.
• Assist maintenance departments with technical support and contribute to enhancing equipment integrity and reliability.
• Provide technical leadership to address recurring operational problems and develop long-term solutions.
• Manage administrative tasks related to project financials and documentation.
• Refine and innovate methods for process calculations and perform troubleshooting investigations on production issues within existing manufacturing units.
• Conduct safety assessments pertinent to project execution and process modifications.
• Develop and update operational manuals for process changes and commissioning activities.
• Foster effective partnerships with equipment suppliers, contractors, and internal stakeholders to facilitate seamless project delivery.
• Perform sizing and design of process equipment, vessels, piping, ductwork, and control systems.
• Prepare specifications for equipment and contractors, solicit and evaluate bids, and issue purchase orders accordingly.
• Maintain comprehensive, current process documentation, including unit-specific P&IDs.
• Continuously assess process conditions to identify and implement improvements.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering is mandatory; Professional Engineer (P Eng.) certification is preferred.
• Minimum three years of practical experience in chemical or GMP/FDA-regulated manufacturing environments or industrial settings.
• Residents must be within reasonable commuting distance to the Port Maitland plant or willing to relocate prior to employment commencement.

Skills and Knowledge

• Strong understanding of chemical manufacturing equipment, processes, and associated safety protocols.
• Proficiency in interpreting scientific literature, technical reports, financial documents, and legal paperwork.
• Ability to self-manage with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and critical thinking.
• Knowledge of industrial maintenance procedures, sound engineering practices, and safety standards.
• Expertise in budgeting, cost estimation, and capital project management.
• Effective teamwork capabilities to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including maintenance.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Work is primarily conducted both in office settings and the manufacturing plant at one location.
• Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions as necessary.
• Physical activities include navigating stairs, moving between site areas, occasional lifting, bending, and squatting required.
