About the Company and Project
HEB Construction, a prominent civil construction firm under VINCI Construction, specializes in delivering complex infrastructure projects across New Zealand such as bridges, wharves, piling, precast concrete structures, and civil works. The current focus is on the Ōtaki to North Levin project, aimed at upgrading State Highway 1 (SH1) between Ōtaki and North Levin. This upgrade is intended to enhance road safety, reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency, and stimulate regional economic growth.
The project partners with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, local hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, and Horowhenua District Council. Delivery follows a two-alliance model where each group is accountable for a portion of the highway and related works. The project involves constructing a 24.8 km four-lane highway featuring multiple large bridges, a full interchange at Taraua Road, a half interchange north of Taylors Road, two roundabouts, extensive earthworks totaling roughly 4 million cubic meters, substantial drainage solutions, and structural asphalt concrete pavement.
Role Overview
Under the direction of the Project Manager, the Project Engineer will provide essential technical and operational assistance in the execution of bridge and structural construction activities. Responsibilities include on-site engineering support, subcontractor coordination, quality and safety oversight, programme and cost assistance, construction methodology development, and site set-out operations. The role demands close collaboration with management teams to ensure all work is conducted safely, efficiently, and within specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer engineering guidance for bridge projects including piling, substructure, and superstructure works.
- Contribute to planning construction methods, temporary works coordination and job sequencing.
- Participate in health and safety planning, advocating for safe work approaches and compliance on site.
- Assist in procurement processes, subcontractor management, and tracking project costs.
- Oversee quality assurance procedures involving inspections, testing, and documentation maintenance.
- Conduct site set-out and verification aligned with construction drawings and datum references.
- Support updates to project programmes, including handling variations and extensions of time.
- Ensure adherence to environmental standards and implement optimal site controls.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a driven Senior Site or Project Engineer with at least five years of direct experience in bridge or major structural construction projects. They should be detail-conscious, enjoy active on-site engagement, and excel in teamwork within construction settings.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Engineering degree or comparable qualification.
- Minimum five years experience in senior site engineering roles on bridge/structural projects.
- Solid knowledge of construction methodologies and site management processes.
- Capability to manage site safety, quality control, scheduling, and cost oversight.
- Strong communication skills with a proactive, problem-solving mindset.
- Possession of full Class 1 driver’s license or eligibility to convert an international license.
