Teaching Assistant

Role Overview

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar is hiring a Teaching Assistant for a one-year appointment within the Humanities and Social Sciences group. The role is centered on helping students in Humanities and Social Sciences courses, especially English-based classes and subjects that require extensive writing outside class, including history and philosophy. The selected person will also partner with the Area Head on initiatives across the Humanities and Social Sciences area.

Academic Background

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in English, rhetoric, TESOL, applied linguistics, second language acquisition, or a closely related discipline.

Key Duties

The Teaching Assistant will support the academic and research objectives of the campus by carrying out assigned duties under the guidance of the manager and course instructor.

• Provide in-class support to instructors and help run classroom activities, workshops, projects, and assignments.
• Work with instructors on creating course projects, assignments, and other teaching materials, including setting up required technology and lab arrangements.
• Assist with, or take the lead on, grading assignments, projects, and exams, while giving students helpful feedback on their work.
• Meet students individually to support their writing development.
• Help organize and deliver educational and outreach events for local and external communities.
• Maintain office hours to clarify course concepts and help students complete assignments.
• Support exam proctoring and supervision when needed.
• Handle other tasks connected to the broader educational and research mission of CMUQ.
