Role Overview
The Assistant Bursar position is a full-time, on-site role located at Kansanga Hill Primary School in Kampala. The successful candidate will assist the Bursar in managing daily financial tasks to ensure accurate recording, processing, and reporting of all financial transactions in alignment with the school's financial regulations and applicable statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare invoices and receipts related to school fees and other revenue streams.
- Maintain precise student accounts including posting fee payments and transactions within the accounting system.
- Oversee petty cash management and conduct monthly bank reconciliations.
- Process payment vouchers, journal entries, cheque disbursements, and bank withdrawals.
- Support monthly payroll activities and ensure timely submission of statutory returns such as PAYE, Withholding Tax, and NSSF.
- Assist in preparing monthly management reports, termly budgets, cash flow statements, yearly financial reports, and coordinate annual audits.
- Respond professionally to any fee-related inquiries from parents or guardians.
- Safeguard financial information to maintain confidentiality and integrity.
- Comply with the school’s financial policies and carry out additional duties assigned by the Bursar or school management.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a Diploma in Accounting, Commerce (Accounting Option), Finance, Business Administration, or related disciplines.
- Minimum of two years’ relevant experience in accounting or financial roles; experience in an educational environment preferred.
- Progress toward or completed CPA Level I or above is advantageous.
- Sound understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), financial reporting, Ugandan tax framework, and statutory compliance including PAYE, Withholding Tax, and NSSF.
- Proficient in maintaining thorough financial records and preparing reports.
- Skilled in bank reconciliation, preparing vouchers, journal entries, budgets, and cash-flow analysis.
- Familiarity with school fee systems, pupil account management, and payment tracking is preferred.
- Competence with Microsoft Excel, Word, and accounting software.
- Strong analytical skills, precise budgeting, financial planning aptitude, and meticulous attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills to engage professionally with parents, staff, and stakeholders.
- Exhibits high integrity, confidentiality, professionalism, and dependability in managing financial data and cash operations.
- Excellent organizational and time management capabilities to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Capable of working autonomously and collaboratively within a dynamic school setting.
