About The Role
Hopper seeks an Assistant Controller to collaborate closely with the Global Corporate Controller during a pivotal period of evolution. This position is focused on automating financial close processes, developing data infrastructure integration between the data warehouse and NetSuite, and crafting a reporting system that harmonizes GAAP with management metrics. The Assistant Controller will lead external audits, manage technical accounting issues, and supervise the monthly close process, all while exercising significant autonomy. The company strives for complete automation without exceptions, and this role is key to achieving that vision.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth technical accounting research and prepare memos addressing ASC 470 (convertible notes, warrants), ASC 606, ASC 842, share-based compensation, new product accounting, and complex equity and financing transactions.
- Lead comprehensive global audit oversight as the main external auditor contact.
- Design and implement an internal control system and guide SOX compliance readiness initiatives.
- Supervise the accuracy and GAAP adherence of monthly close activities, detect any inconsistencies, and hold the accounting operations team accountable for excellence.
- Manage consolidation across multiple entities and currencies, handle intercompany reconciliations, and ensure compliance with transfer pricing regulations.
- Chart data pathways from the warehouse to NetSuite, identify automation obstacles, and work with Engineering to streamline the close process.
- Create and automate reconciliation processes that align management reporting with GAAP figures.
- Introduce AI technologies to reduce manual accounting tasks.
- Oversee all aspects of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash operations teams.
Candidate Profile
- Over 10 years of advanced accounting experience with capability to function at a director level.
- Current CPA accreditation is mandatory.
- Experience within public companies with exposure to large-scale and mature financial organizational environments.
- Proven leadership in managing audits as the primary liaison rather than solely a preparer.
- Strong background in drafting technical accounting memos on complex subjects.
- Familiarity with SOX requirements and internal control frameworks.
- Experience leading system development and automation projects, not just maintenance.
- A forward-looking mindset focused on automation and strong proficiency or eager willingness to learn AI tools.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn SQL/data querying to independently address data issues.
- Experience with NetSuite configuration, data architecture, or automation of the close process is highly advantageous.
- Background in travel technology, fintech, or marketplace industries considered a plus.
- Experience with pre-IPO or IPO preparation is beneficial.
Benefits and Perks
- Opportunity to join a well-funded, high-growth startup with competitive salary and upside potential through pre-IPO equity awards.
- Complete coverage of group insurance premiums.
- Life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance provided.
- Health Spending Account (HSA) covering eligible medical and dental costs.
- Access for employees and their dependents to telemedicine services anywhere, anytime.
- Participation in an RRSP plan with automatic pre-tax payroll deductions.
- Generous parental leave policies exceeding typical industry standards.
- Unlimited paid time off.
- Travel stipend as "Carrot Cash".
- Access to coworking spaces via FlexDesk and a work-from-home stipend.
- Entrepreneurial work environment encouraging risk-taking and innovation.
- Open, transparent communication with company leadership.
- Small, agile teams where individual contributions have significant impact.
