Job description
Position Overview
The Assistant Sous Chef will oversee and coordinate the daily activities of kitchen staff including cooks and helpers. This role involves ensuring food presentation standards are met, including decorative displays, proper portions, arrangement, and garnishing. The Assistant Sous Chef is accountable for monitoring food quantities prepared, communicating menu updates and shortages to Food & Beverage staff, and assisting with special meal preparation or substitutions. Additionally, the role supports cooks by providing necessary items and supervises kitchen inventory and supply levels.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise cooks and kitchen workers to ensure smooth operation.
- Create visually appealing food displays and maintain portion control standards.
- Monitor food quantities and inform team about specials and out-of-stock items.
- Assist in preparing special dietary meals and substitute dishes as required.
- Support kitchen staff by providing ingredients and supplies.
- Oversee kitchen stock and maintain accurate logs for food safety compliance.
- Maintain food quality standards and report discrepancies to management.
- Assist management with recruitment, training, scheduling, evaluation, coaching, and employee motivation.
- Ensure adherence to all company safety, security policies, and hygiene standards.
- Report maintenance issues, safety incidents, and hazardous conditions promptly.
- Maintain professional appearance and confidentiality of proprietary information.
- Address guest service requirements proactively and communicate professionally with staff and guests.
- Foster positive working relationships and support teamwork to meet common goals.
- Perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, lifting objects up to 25 pounds as required.
- Undertake additional reasonable duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications and Experience
- Technical, trade, or vocational school diploma preferred.
- Between 4 to 6 years of relevant work experience in a culinary setting.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a supervisory role within a kitchen environment.
- No specific licenses or certifications required.
